Horizons is designed to be a friendly and easily accessible hub of support. Whether you are in need of assistance in a particular subject, need to print off documents in between classes, or you just don’t know who to talk to, we can help you. A diverse staff welcomes conversations with students about their interests, challenges, and successes.  We provide comprehensive methods in ensuring student success through the following services:

Horizons students have a designated work space for studying and computer usage. There are several computers, printers, and a scanner for student use. All printing is free of charge for Horizons students and will not be deducted from their account.

Horizons offers its students free one-on-one tutoring in all core math and science courses as well as foreign language. Exceptions for other subjects can be made on a case-by-case basis. Horizons students can visit the office to request a tutor form per subject.  The student can request a tutor for more than one course; the maximum allowance is set at three total courses. Tutoring takes place in the Horizons study area Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm.

Faculty Mentoring

During a student’s first year at Purdue, participants are matched with a faculty or staff member in their preferred area of study. Mentors serve as knowledgeable and experience guides, caring facilitators, role models, and most of all a trusted ally or advocate.  The mentor experience is only mandated their first semester in college, however most relationships last well throughout their academic career at Purdue.

Peer Mentoring

All freshmen students who are enrolled in the 3 credit GS199 course partake in group peer mentoring led by a trained Horizons upperclassman. The peer mentoring component of Horizons helps new students during their first year to help ease the transition by serving as a support and resource person who provides information, encouragement, and guidance.

Supplemental Instruction

All freshmen who are taking a math course their freshman year participate in Supplemental Instruction (SI). SI is an academic support model that uses peer-assisted study sessions to improve student retention and success within targeted historically difficult courses.  SI is a non-remedial approach that provides regular review sessions outside of class in which students work collaboratively by discussing readings, comparing notes, working together to predict test items, and sharing ideas for improving class material.

Academic Counseling

Horizons advising is available to students from their freshman year through graduation providing supplemental advising in all aspects of their educational planning, including course planning, study skills, GPA management, and referral services.

Career Counseling

The Horizons Career Counselor is available to support students in their career-related challenges as well as choice of major in reference to their future. We aim in assisting students in gaining a better understanding of what really matters for them personally, how they can plan their careers autonomously, and empowering them to make informed decisions. Referral services to the Center for Career Opportunities are also available.

Convocations Tickets

Horizons provides its participants with an assortment of cultural enrichment opportunities in conjunction with Purdue Convocations. Each semester we send out a list of events students can attend free of charge. Contact our office for current offerings!
