I’m from the inner city of Indianapolis, IN and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. I enrolled into Purdue University Fall of 2007 with a full academic scholarship through the Science Bound Program. I had trouble adapting to the new demands of college and quickly became overwhelmed by the academic rigor. I knew that there was a lot of help offered by Purdue but I was slow to take action, almost like a deer in headlights.

In the midst of maturing as a young adult, searching for my soul purpose, and failing miserably through weed out courses, I was introduced to Horizons. The first piece of advice I received was most pivotal in my transition: stay on campus until all assignments were completed. I practically lived in the Horizons office! Just by being around, I met so many students who were striving for success. Students were involved on campus, participated in tutoring sessions, attended career fairs and had internships. Everything mentioned was the exact opposite of my collegiate experience up to that point. This provided me with tremendous motivation.

The second phase of my process was learning what I wanted to do. I took personality tests, reviewed all majors of interest and talked to student advisors about the implications of switching majors. After developing a professional resume, I went to every career fair that applied to my area of study. I finally became a successful student!

I went from academic probation to Dean’s list with the help and support of the Horizons program. As I learned, I taught others, just as the students of the program did for me. I gave back to the community through my service work at the Boys & Girls Club. I adopted the culture of excellence!

Being a part of Horizons has done so much for me in various ways. As an alumni, I still keep in touch with mentors and reach out for support. I would recommend this program to any student on campus.
