First established in 1995, Horizons’ Faculty Mentoring Program has become an essential component of Horizons efforts to edify, promote academic success, and provide support to its participants towards degree attainment. Higher Education research highlights that an important component of student retention and academic success is making meaningful connections at the University. Horizons is committed to this effort by initiating a relationship between first-year student and a faculty member with similar professional interests. The opportunities for the student to establish a network and a professional collegial connection are unlimited.

Goals of the Horizons Faculty Mentoring Program are to:

  1. Support a student with the difficult transition from high school to college.
  2. Encourage students to create meaningful connections with university officials.
  3. Help students to explore possibilities within a particular academic field.
  4. Assist students in forming a professional network.
  5. Support Horizons in the effort to increase student retention, graduation, and satisfaction.

At the conclusion of the Horizons Faculty Mentor Program, Horizons established an annual Faculty Mentor Reception to honor and recognize each Purdue faculty mentor who participated in our program. Faculty mentors and student mentees are invited to attend. At the reception, special recognition is given to faculty who has shown dedication to the Horizons Faculty Mentor Program and contributed to the overall mission of Horizons Student Support Services. This year we expanded the reception to include Horizons student recognition including Horizons Achiever Awards, Horizons Global Leader Award, and a Horizons Outstanding Tutor Award.
