The Perennial Plant Association has selected Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii “Goldsturm” as its 1999 Perennial Plant of the Year. Members of the association, made up primarily of professional plant growers, each year select a perennial, which is used to educate the gardening public and to promote the planting of perennial flowers.<\/p>\n
Goldsturm is a popular and reliable perennial that is widely planted throughout the world. Its bright yellow, “black-eyed-Susan” type blooms provide spectacular show from mid-July right up until frost. Also known as orange coneflower, the ‘Goldsturm’ Rudbeckia is notable for is compact growth habit reaching 18-30 inches tall. The sturdy stems rarely require staking.<\/p>\n
Once established, Goldsturm is a long-lived perennial. Although it can adapt to light shade, best performance occurs in full sun and well-drained soil. Goldsturm is easily propagated by seed, division of mature plants or by stem cuttings. Goldsturm is an excellent companion to other late-blooming perennials and ornamental grasses.<\/p>\n
