Here&#8217;s a look at just a few of the new vegetable seed offerings for 2010. Try a few alongside your old standby favorites so that you can compare performance in your garden.<\/p>\n<p>Basil &#8216;Amethyst Improved&#8217; is a dark purple basil with large, thick, curled-down leaves similar to the classic variety Genovese, but on a compact plant reaching just 16-20 inches. 60 days. (Jo)<\/p>\n<p>Beet &#8216;Taunus&#8217; boasts 6-7 inch long deep purple-red cylinders of firm, sweet, juicy flesh, with paper-thin skins. These beets were made for slicing! The young tops are great for beet greens. 65 days. (C, Ju)<\/p>\n<p>Brussels Sprouts &#8216;Churchill&#8217; is an early producer of large, smooth sprouts on a vigorous stocky plant. 90 days. (Jo)<\/p>\n<p>Bush Bean &#8216;Beananza&#8217; is a new dwarf French bean that bears slender, 7-inch stringless filet beans for several pickings through summer. Pick them regularly to keep them producing. 55 days (B)<\/p>\n<p>Cucumber &#8216;Sultan&#8217; is a beit alpha-type cuke (seedless, sets fruit without pollination), dark green, spineless, thin-skinned with good disease resistance. Pick early for mini cukes. 56 days. (Jo)<\/p>\n<p>Lettuce &#8216;Flying Saucer&#8217; Series is a blend of deep-green, red and yellow frisee lettuces with crisped, ruffled leaves. Although this new series is resistant to tip burn, it is still best grown as a cool-season crop. 50 days. (B)<\/p>\n<p>Lettuce &#8216;Skyphos&#8217; is a large, butterhead-type, dark red with contrasting green centers. 47 days. (Jo)<br \/>\nMuskmelon &#8216;Sugar Cube&#8217; is a personal-sized mini melon with sweet, deep orange flesh on disease-resistant plants. 80 Days. (S)<\/p>\n<p>Okra &#8216;Millionaire&#8217; is a fast-growing, vigorous producer; pick pods when 3-4 inches long and keep them picked frequently. The lovely large lemon-yellow flowers are also edible and can be stuffed or used as a garnish. 50 days. (Jo)<\/p>\n<p>Pepper &#8216;Dulce&#8217; is classified as a sweet pepper, but sports jalapeno flavor and appearance, but without the heat. 65 days green, 85 days red ripe. (Jo, S)<\/p>\n<p>Tomato &#8216;Big Pink&#8217; is a medium-sized (8-10 oz.) tomato with rosy smooth skin on moderate-sized plants. Indeterminate. 75 days. (B)<\/p>\n<p>Tomato &#8216;Red Pearl&#8217; bears large, grape-type fruits with tender skin and few seeds. Plants have high resistance to fusarium wilt, intermediate resistance to late blight. Indeterminate. 58 days. (Jo)<\/p>\n<p>Tomato &#8216;Tye-Dye&#8217; is a unique new bicolor gold-and-red hybrid promising to deliver heirloom flavor similar to Big Rainbow, Pineapple and Georgia Streak, but with bigger yields, consistent form and better disease resistance. The 7-ounce orange fruits are marbled with red streaks. Indeterminate. 78 days.
