Some of these terms can be confusing, especially to the gardening newcomer. So here\u2019s a brief list of terms that all gardeners should get familiar with.<\/p>\n<p>Annual \u2014 Plant that completes its life cycle from seed germination to seed production in one growing season.<\/p>\n<p>Biennial \u2014 Plant that completes its life cycle over two growing seasons; usually produces only vegetation its first season, then flowers and fruits the second season, and then dies.<\/p>\n<p>Bulb \u2014 Underground plant structure made up of modified stem and leaves for storing carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<p>Bud \u2014 Undeveloped shoot with leaves (vegetative) or flowers (floral).<\/p>\n<p>Conifer \u2014 Plant whose fruiting structure is a cone.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivar \u2014 Cultivated variety; chosen for a feature(s) that varies from its species.<\/p>\n<p>Deciduous \u2014 Plant that loses all of its leaves annually.<\/p>\n<p>Dormant \u2014 Reduced state of physiological activity.<\/p>\n<p>Evergreen \u2014 Plant that retains at least some of its foliage throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Herbaceous \u2014 Plant that dies back to the ground at the end of the growing season (can be annual or perennial).<\/p>\n<p>Horticulture \u2014 Art and science of growing ornamental plants, vegetables and fruits.<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid \u2014 Result from the interbreeding of two distinct species, cultivars or varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Invasive \u2014 Growing aggressively and outcompeting other plants in the same area; difficult to control.<\/p>\n<p>Invasive Species \u2014 A non-native species whose aggressive character does, or is likely to cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health.<\/p>\n<p>Mulch \u2014 Cover placed on top of soil and\/or around growing plants to suppress weed growth, conserve soil moisture, and\/or modify temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Native plant \u2014 Plant species indigenous to a specific geographic area and, thus, usually best adapted to those local conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hla\/sites\/yardandgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/WellfieldBotanicalGarden-scaled.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11654 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hla\/sites\/yardandgarden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/WellfieldBotanicalGarden-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Vegetation and pond\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>Perennial \u2014 Plant that lives for more than two growing seasons; can have multiple seed stages.<\/p>\n<p>Photosynthesis \u2014 Process by which plants convert light energy, carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<p>Pinch \u2014 Removal of young stem tips.<\/p>\n<p>Plant Propagation \u2014 Increase in the number of plants, using seed, stem, leaf, root or other plant tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Shrub \u2014 Woody perennial plant with multiple main stems, generally smaller than a tree.<\/p>\n<p>Tree \u2014 Woody perennial plant with one or very few main stem(s).<\/p>\n<p>Wildflower \u2014 Plant species that grows and reproduces on its own, without human intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Woody Plant \u2014 Plant whose stems persist from year to year, adding layers of cells each season<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gardening enthusiasts have their own set of jargon, just like many other hobbyists.
