Garden All Four Season at Hendricks County Master Gardeners Event

Adventures in Gardening Seminar Scheduled for October 7

(Danville, Ind., Aug. 8, 2017) For many of us, this is a busy time in the garden as tomatoes ripen and flowers bloom. But once the seasons change, there’s still plenty of garden fun to be had. To prove it, the Hendricks County Master Gardeners annual “Adventures in Gardening” seminar has the theme “Four Seasons,” with speakers addressing Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The event, to be held on October 7 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds & Conference Complex, 1900 E. Main St., Danville, Ind., will feature the following programs.

Spring: Brent Heath from Brent & Becky’s Bulbs of in Gloucester, Va., will address “Bulbs as Companion Plants” and “Magical Mystical Meadows with Bulbs.” Heath and wife Becky live, farm and garden on 28 acres, including more than eight acres they use to demonstrate how to use flower bulbs with annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs organically.

Summer: Greg Marlett of Hard Way Farms in Martinsville, Ind., will share amusing stories about how to garden the Hard Way so attendees can learn from his mistakes. Marlett has completed both the Indiana Master Gardener and the Indiana Master Naturalist courses. He and wife Jennifer raise laying hens, hogs and produce on a one-quarter acre lot in a residential subdivision. Marlett is also  the environmental educator for Morgan County’s Soil and Water Conservation District, Solid Waste Management District, and Parks and Recreation Department. His presentation will also include aquaponics.

Autumn: Jo Ellen Myers Sharp will bring cuttings from her garden and talk about each plant and growing tips. Then she will arrange the flowers in a bouquet, to be given away. Jo Ellen contributes to many publications, including the Indianapolis Star and Angie’s List, the American Gardener and Indiana Gardening magazines. She is co-author of The Indiana Gardener’s Guide and author of The Visitor’s Guide to American Gardens. Known as the Hoosier Gardener, she has been writing and speaking about natural gardening for more than 25 years.

Winter: Tess Park, a member of the Conifer Society, has a fast-paced, eye-candy PowerPoint presentation of plants with features to enjoy in Zone 5 from November to March. Along with husband Jay, she reclaimed an overgrown 3.6 acres, including 1 acre of woods, and began planting trees, wildflowers, and conifers. Park is also a member of the American Hosta Society. In 2007, the National Hosta Convention gave its award for Best Companion Plants to the Park’s gardens.

The program will also include two optional workshops on living flower arrangements with layers of bulbs led by Heath. Those who register for the workshops will take home a planter that they create. A silent auction and book sale will also take place.

The seminar is open to the public, but pre-registration and payment of the $45 fee is required. The registration fee includes a winter-themed oatmeal buffet breakfast (7:30 – 9 a.m.), a summer-themed picnic lunch and all materials.
