{"id":2582,"date":"2023-10-31T19:54:51","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/albert24"},"modified":"2026-01-12T11:55:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:55:48","slug":"glossary-of-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/hla\/sites\/iah\/glossary-of-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary of Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Abiotic Disease<\/strong> \u2013 abnormal condition of a plant that is caused by a non- infectious agent, i.e.; environment, people<\/li>\n<li><strong>Abscission<\/strong> \u2013 natural dropping of leaves, flowers and other plant parts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Acid Soil<\/strong> \u2013 soils with a pH below 7.0.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Active Ingredient<\/strong> \u2013 the chemical that actually controls the pest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aeration<\/strong> \u2013 increasing the amount of air space in the soil by tilling or removing cores.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aggregation<\/strong> \u2013 combining soil particles<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alkaline Soil<\/strong> \u2013 soil with a pH above 7.0.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternate leaf<\/strong> \u2013 the arrangement of leaves or buds when they occur singly at a node.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annual<\/strong> \u2013 a plant that completes its life cycle, from seed to seed in one year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annual Ring<\/strong> \u2013 the annual growth layer when observed in cross section, the result of water transporting tissues becoming inactive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apical Dominance<\/strong> \u2013 the suppression of lateral bud growth by the terminal bud.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Backfill<\/strong> \u2013 a soil mixture that balances sand loam, clay and organic matter to obtain a medium with adequate air space for drainage and root growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bacteria<\/strong> \u2013 one cell microorganisms that multiply by division and cause produce blights, wilts, or leaf spots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balled and Burlapped [ B &amp; B stock]<\/strong> \u2013 trees and shrubs that have been prepared for transplanting by digging with soil around the roots in an undisturbed ball then covered with burlap or similar mesh fabric.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balled and Potted [B &amp; P]<\/strong> &#8211; trees and shrubs that have been dug with soil around the roots and placed in a container.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bare-root Stock [B R]<\/strong> \u2013 harvested trees and shrubs that have been dug and the soil or growing medium removed from around the roots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benchmark<\/strong> \u2013 a point of defined elevation on a grading plan<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biennial<\/strong> \u2013 a plant that completes its life cycle in 2 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Binomial System<\/strong> \u2013 a system in which a plant is named with a two part scientific name.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biotic<\/strong> <strong>Disease<\/strong> \u2013 abnormal condition of a plant caused by a living micro-organism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Branch<\/strong> <strong>Collar<\/strong> \u2013 enlarged base of the limb that produces the tissue to close a pruning cut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bud<\/strong> \u2013 a young undeveloped shoot or flower.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Budding<\/strong> \u2013 a propagation method that involves the placement of a bud from the desirable plant on the rootstock of a seedling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calcium<\/strong> \u2013 a nutrient necessary for plant growth, also used to raise pH.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caliper<\/strong> \u2013 diameter of a tree measured at 6\u201d above the ground for trees less than 4 inches in diameter. For larger trees, the caliper measurement is taken at 12\u201d above the ground.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Candle<\/strong> \u2013 the new shoot of growth on a conifer, i.e.; pine and spruce trees<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cation Exchange Capacity<\/strong> \u2013 measure of soils capacity to hold nutrients<\/li>\n<li><strong>Callus Tissue<\/strong> \u2013 wound tissue that forms on or below a wounded surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cambium<\/strong> \u2013 a one or two cell thick zone of cell division that produces phloem and xylem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cell<\/strong> \u2013 the basic microscopic building block of living organisms where growth processes occur.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cell Division<\/strong> \u2013 the basis of plant growth which occurs in the meristem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chlorophyll<\/strong> \u2013 the green pigment necessary for photosynthesis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chlorosis<\/strong> \u2013 yellowing of foliage due to the loss or breakdown of chlorophyll.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clay<\/strong> &#8211; smallest of the soil particles that combine with silt and sand to determine the soil texture<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clone<\/strong> \u2013 a group of individuals that have originated from a common plant. Propagation of a clone cannot occur from seed but instead from cuttings, grafts or divisions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cold Hardiness<\/strong> \u2013 minimum cold temperature at which twigs and buds of a plant will survive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compound Leaf<\/strong> \u2013 a leaf divided into two or more parts called leaflets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contract Documents<\/strong> \u2013 plans and specifications and other legally binding documents that define how a project is to be completed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool Season grasses<\/strong> \u2013 lawn grass species that prefer cooler temperatures and may go dormant when temperatures are above 90 degrees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conifer<\/strong> \u2013 woody trees and shrubs that produce cones, includes pines, spruce, hemlock, juniper, and spruce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Container grown<\/strong> \u2013 plants grown continuously in a container, usually in artificial media.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultivar<\/strong> \u2013 a cultivated variety<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cuttings<\/strong> \u2013 a part of a plant used to develop a new plant with roots, stems and leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dead-heading<\/strong> \u2013 removing spent flowers to encourage continued blooming or to improve appearance of a plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deciduous<\/strong> \u2013 trees or shrubs that drop their leaves at the end of each growing season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defoliate<\/strong> &#8211; loss of plant leaves that is often caused by insects, diseases or environmental conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dermal Absorption<\/strong> \u2013 most common method of pesticide exposure to the applicator through the skin or eyes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Desiccation<\/strong> \u2013 Dehydration or loss of water from the plant tissue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disease<\/strong> <strong>Triangle<\/strong> \u2013 Disease management concept that recognizes the need for a host, a pathogen and the correct environment to result in a disease. .<\/li>\n<li><strong>Landscape<\/strong> <strong>Design<\/strong> \u2013 the art of creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment for human use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Design<\/strong> <strong>principles<\/strong> \u2013 order, unity, dominance, repetition, scale and balance<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dicotyledon<\/strong> \u2013 a flowering plant so named because it has two cotyledons or seed leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Division<\/strong> \u2013 a method of propagating plants by breaking the roots or bulbs of the parent plant apart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dormancy<\/strong> &#8211; an inactive period during which a seed or plant rests due to internal causes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Double cut method<\/strong> \u2013 A pruning technique used to prevent splitting the tree bark.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation<\/strong> \u2013 the vertical form of the land surface on a landscape site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation View<\/strong> \u2013 a two dimensional drawing that shows a side view of a project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evergreen<\/strong> \u2013 A plant that retains all or most of its foliage year round.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exotic<\/strong> <strong>Plants<\/strong> \u2013 plants that have been introduced into region or state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Family<\/strong> \u2013 a grouping of genera that resemble each other, the family name ends in \u2013aceae.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer<\/strong> \u2013 a material added to soil to provide elements essential for plant growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer analysis<\/strong> \u2013 the percent of nitrogen, phosphorous (P2O5) and potassium (K2O) in a fertilizer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer, complete<\/strong> \u2013 a fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer, incomplete<\/strong> \u2013 a fertilizer that contains any combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but not all three.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer, inorganic<\/strong> \u2013 fertilizer produced thru mining or manufacturing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fertilizer, organic<\/strong> \u2013 fertilizer product that is a by-product of plant or animal residues and usually is slowly available to the plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flower<\/strong> \u2013 showy part of the plant that produces fruit and seeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flushes of growth<\/strong> \u2013 growth that originates from the enlargement of a specific number of cells contained within the bud.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fruit<\/strong> \u2013 the mature ovary from a flower that functions to protect the developing seeds. An important criterion in the selection of a plant for use in a landscape.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fungi<\/strong> \u2013 microscopic thread-like plants that produce spores. Rusts, molds, leaf spots, mushrooms and cankers are produced by fungi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fungicide<\/strong> \u2013 a pesticide that kills or inhibits the growth of fungi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genus<\/strong> \u2013 a group of closely related species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Girdling<\/strong> \u2013 the severing or removal of bark on a woody stem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Girdling<\/strong> <strong>roots<\/strong> \u2013 condition where roots grow around the trunk of a tree and restrict the movement of water, nutrients and food reserves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grading Plan<\/strong> \u2013 a drawing showing the topography, and the location of proposed elements and proposed elevations for a site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grafting<\/strong> \u2013 the process used to join a root stock to a branch or scion to produce a better plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hardening Off<\/strong> \u2013 the gradual adjustment that plants go through to withstand extreme condition such as colder temperatures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hardy Bulb<\/strong> \u2013 a perennial that forms an enlarged underground structure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heading back<\/strong> \u2013 pruning technique that reduces the stem length to reduce the overall size of a plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Herbaceous<\/strong> &#8211; plants with non-woody fleshy stems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Herbicide<\/strong> \u2013 a pesticide used to kill or inhibit plant growth, normally used on weeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Horizon<\/strong> \u2013 layers of soil in an undisturbed site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hybrid plant<\/strong> \u2013 a plant that is the produced by pollenizing the pistil of one species with the pollen of another. Written with an \u201cx\u201d in the scientific name.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inert ingredient<\/strong> \u2013 material that the active chemical ingredient is dissolved into.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insecticide<\/strong> \u2013 a pesticide used to control insects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ion<\/strong> \u2013 positively or negatively charged particles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iron [Fe]<\/strong> \u2013 a micronutrient needed during photosynthesis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iron chlorosis<\/strong> \u2013 a condition where iron is deficient in the leaf resulting in leaf yellowing with green veins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internode<\/strong> \u2013 the part of a stem located between nodes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juvenility<\/strong> \u2013 stage in plant development where growth is in the vegetative mode only and will not produce seeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Layout Plan<\/strong> \u2013 A drawing showing the exact location of proposed site elements. Lateral Bud \u2013 a bud at the base of a leaf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Layering<\/strong> \u2013 a simple method of propagation by developing roots on the stem of a plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaching<\/strong> &#8211; downward movement of water and minerals in the soil.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaf scorch<\/strong> \u2013 a symptom of lack of water in a leaf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Machine Balled<\/strong> \u2013 nursery plant that is dug bare root and packaged in sawdust or sphagnum peat moss and wrapped in plastic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Macronutrients<\/strong> \u2013 nine elements essential to plant growth and development used in large quantities (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, calcium, and magnesium).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Magnesium [Mg]<\/strong> \u2013 nutrient that aids in the development of green color (chlorophyll) in the plant tissue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maturity<\/strong> \u2013 the stage in plant growth at which seeds may be produced.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meristem<\/strong> \u2013 tissue in all plants consisting of undifferentiated cells.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Metabolism<\/strong> &#8211; activity in the cell that includes all the chemistry of life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Microclimate<\/strong> \u2013 the environment immediately surrounding a plant or area of a landscape site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Micronutrients<\/strong> \u2013 eight elements essential to plant growth and used in small quantities (iron, copper, manganese, zinc, molybdenum, boron, chlorine and nickel).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miticide<\/strong> \u2013 a pesticide used to control mites<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monocotyledon<\/strong> \u2013 a flowering plant with one cotyledon or seed leaf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mulch<\/strong> \u2013 A layer of organic or inorganic material used around plants to moderate soil temperature, conserve moisture and reduce weeds and run-off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Native Plant<\/strong> \u2013 plants grown in natural populations in a region or state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nematocide<\/strong> \u2013 chemical used to kill nematodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nematode<\/strong> \u2013 a microscopic work capable of piercing roots and feeding on them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nitrogen<\/strong> \u2013 nutrient responsible for vegetative growth that becomes part of the protein molecule.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Node<\/strong> \u2013 area on a stem where leaves are attached and buds formed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non Selective Herbicide<\/strong> \u2013 pesticide which will kill all vegetation it comes in contact with.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-translocated herbicide<\/strong> \u2013 weed killer that does not move when absorbed into the plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutrients<\/strong> \u2013 elements necessary for plant growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutrient Deficiency<\/strong> \u2013 lack of adequate amount of a plant nutrient or soil conditions that prevent the plant from taking up the nutrient.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opposite leaf<\/strong> \u2013 the arrangement of leaves or buds when they occur in pairs at the nodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oral Exposure<\/strong> \u2013 method of pesticide exposure to the applicator by ingestion through the mouth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organ<\/strong> \u2013 plant parts composed of multiple tissues organized for specific function; leaves, stems, buds roots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organic matter<\/strong> &#8211; partially decomposed plant and animal residue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ornamental grasses<\/strong> \u2013 perennial or annual with grass like habit that is not mowed like turf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pathogen<\/strong> \u2013 A living micro-organism capable of producing a plant disease. ie; fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People Pressure Diseases<\/strong> \u2013 abnormal conditions in plants caused by the ignorance and abuse of people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perennial<\/strong> &#8211; a plant that lives from one season to the next and usually lives for more than 2 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>pH<\/strong> \u2013 a measure of a soils hydrogen ion activity on a scale from 0 \u2013 14 that indicates the acid or alkaline condition of the soil. A pH of 7 is neutral.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phloem<\/strong> \u2013 the tissue responsible for transporting \u201cplant food\u201d in the plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photosynthesis<\/strong> \u2013 a metabolic system which produces sugar and oxygen from carbon dioxide, water and light energy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phytotoxicity<\/strong> \u2013 plant injury caused by sensitivity to a pesticide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phosphorus<\/strong> &#8211; nutrient used during early growth and for root development and flower and seed production.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant tissue<\/strong> \u2013 organized groups of large numbers of cells to accomplish a particular function.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Planting Plan<\/strong> \u2013 a scale drawing showing the location of all plants to be installed on a project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post-emergent<\/strong> \u2013 application of a herbicide after the plant leaf emerges above the soil surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Potassium [K]<\/strong> \u2013 nutrient used by a plant to build a resistance to cold, also used in food or nutrient transport within the plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal Protective Equipment [PPE]<\/strong> \u2013 Clothing and equipment necessary to avoid overexposure to pesticides.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-emergence<\/strong> \u2013 application of a herbicide before the plant leaf emerges from the soil.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Potted Plants<\/strong> \u2013 nursery stock dug bare root and then planted in a container.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Propagation<\/strong> \u2013 methods of reproducing plants ie: seeds, cuttings, grafting, budding, division, bulbs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quarantine<\/strong> \u2013 the restriction of movement of plant materials in order to control the spread of a disease or insect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reentry Statement<\/strong> \u2013 details the time interval between application of a pesticide and the entry of an unprotected person into the application site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rejuvenation<\/strong> \u2013 pruning process where the plant is cut back to the ground.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Renewal<\/strong> \u2013 pruning process used to remove older growth over a 3 year period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Respiration<\/strong> \u2013 plant process where stored energy is released to support plant growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Respiratory exposure<\/strong> &#8211; method of pesticide exposure to the applicator through the lungs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rhizome<\/strong> \u2013 underground plant stem that can send out roots at the nodes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Root-bound<\/strong> \u2013The root system of a container plant becoming overgrown and circling repeatedly inside the container. Also called pot bound.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Root flare<\/strong> \u2013 the transition zone between the trunk of a tree and the root system, also called root collar. Should be exposed at the soil surface when planting the tree.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Root hair<\/strong> \u2013 outgrowths from the cells on the surface of the root, located within one half inch of the root tip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Root pruning<\/strong> \u2013 cutting roots to encourage a more compact root system and improve transplanting success.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sand<\/strong> \u2013 largest of the individual soil particles<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name<\/strong> \u2013 a two part name used to identify plants and animals; it consists of the genus and species names. Developed by Carolus Linneaus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Section View<\/strong> \u2013 a two dimensional drawing that shows a cut-through side view of a project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Selective herbicide<\/strong> \u2013 Pesticide which will control a specific type of weed with little or no damage to other plants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senescence<\/strong> \u2013 stage of plant development where the plant prepares for death of a plant organ.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silt<\/strong> \u2013 intermediate sized soil particles<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simple Leaf<\/strong> \u2013 an undivided leaf blade<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slow release fertilizer<\/strong> &#8211; fertilizer product which provides nutrient release over an extended period of time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soil Amendments<\/strong> \u2013 materials added to soil to improve texture, aeration, water retention and nutrient retention. Usually organic matter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soil texture<\/strong> \u2013 combination of sand, silt and clay particles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spot Elevation<\/strong> \u2013 an individual point on a project site that is called out on the drawing for its precise elevation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Species<\/strong> \u2013 a group of closely related plants, each possessing similar characteristics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Starter fertilizer<\/strong> \u2013 a fertilizer applied when planting or seeding containing nutrients to aid root and seedling growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stolon<\/strong> \u2013 above ground plant stem that can develop new plants at the nodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stomates<\/strong> \u2013small plant structures on the underside of the leaf that permit the exchange of gases and water vapor from the leaf to the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sulfur [S]<\/strong> \u2013 a macronutrient needed by plants, also a compound used to lower pH.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thatch<\/strong> \u2013 dead and decomposing grass plants<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thinning<\/strong> \u2013 pruning technique where an entire branch is removed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tissue<\/strong> \u2013 a group of cells with a similar function.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tissue Culture<\/strong> \u2013 A specialized method of propagation utilizing small amounts of tissue from the parent plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Translocation<\/strong> &#8211; movement of materials around in a plant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Translocated herbicide<\/strong> \u2013a chemical that moves in the plant once it is absorbed by the leaf or roots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transpiration<\/strong> \u2013 evaporation of water from the leaves through the stomates to the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toxicity<\/strong> \u2013 inherent ability of a chemical to cause harm to a living entity<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuber<\/strong> \u2013 a modified plant structure to store plant food.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turgid<\/strong> \u2013 leaves not wilted; having adequate moisture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variety<\/strong> \u2013 a subdivision describing a race or form within a species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetative Propagation<\/strong> \u2013 plant reproduction without seed. ie; cuttings, grafting, bulbs, division, budding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Virus<\/strong> \u2013 disease causing agent, smaller than bacteria causing leaf spots or yellows in plants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water sprout<\/strong> \u2013 a fast growing shoot that originates from a bark wound of pruning cut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Warm Season Grasses<\/strong> \u2013 turf grasses that grow well when temperatures are above 90 degrees and go dormant in the winter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wilting<\/strong> \u2013 plant tissue that becomes limp due to a lack of water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Xylem<\/strong> \u2013 tissue responsible for water and nutrient transport in plants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zone<\/strong> \u2013 USDA Hardiness zone describing plants ability to withstand cold temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTE: Chapter 8 includes an extensive glossary of terminology for insects.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abiotic Disease \u2013 abnormal condition of a plant that is caused by a non- infectious agent, i.e.; environment, people Abscission \u2013 natural dropping of leaves, flowers and other plant parts.
