Vicki Stirm, Kathryn Orvis and Karen Mitchell hosted several youth outreach projects in June. Carlos López and Jeanine Arana (Meyers’ Lab) and Lais McCartney (Purdue ANR Educator, Hancock County), presented about “Horticulture careers” to fifth graders at Eastern Hancock Elementary School. The 5th graders learned about horticulture crops grown in Indiana and the importance of horticulture. All the students took home a peppermint plant thanks to the Meyers’ lab research.


This week Dr. Kathryn Orvis and Vicki Stirm hosted sessions for the 4-H Round Up. There were fourteen students (from various counties in Indiana), two chaperones, and one Youth Ambassador. The session was titled “Inside Out Plants,” which included a scavenger hunt in the Jules Janick Horticulture Garden, followed by flower dissections in the classroom.


On Friday, April 28th, Chris Adair and Vicki Stirm presented to youth from the World Food Prize Youth Institute. There were 3 groups totaling 28 students plus adults. The topic was food security.
