Kathryn Orvis and Peter Hirst were part of a team that was just awarded the PK-12 Team Engagement Award for their work on the Apple Crunch project. The team developed videos and educational materials for grades 1-3 to teach about apple nutrition and careers, and promote healthy eating habits.



The 2023 Indiana Horticultural Conference and Expo was held January 23 and 24 at the Beck Agricultural Center in West Lafayette. The Conference consisted of educational tracks in fresh vegetables, apples, small fruits, farming basics, food safety, and business & marketing. Peter Hirst hosted 7 classes of 3rd graders from West Lafayette Elementary School at the Meigs farm. As well as learning about apples, the kids learned about genetics, mitosis, math, health, and nutrition. Thanks to Chloe Richard, Paul Howard and Jay Young at Meigs for their able assistance.


3 The HORT 318 class visited Meigs on Wednesday. Lab concentrated on learning how to prune grape vines (with Miranda Purcell), peaches and apples (with Peter Hirst).
