Jeanine Arana‘s presentation, “Black soldier fly composting reduced weed seed germination,” won first place in the 3MT competition at the 10th Annual Agricultural and Biological Engineering Graduate Industrial Research Symposium “Reshaping the Future through Science and Technology.” She competed against students from multiple departments within the Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering at Purdue.
Emmanuel Cooper (MS/Meyer’s Lab) attended the Ecological Sciences and Engineering (ESE) symposium held Feb. 23 at the Dean’s auditorium and competed in the poster session for grad students. His paper, titled: “Evaluation of Weed Removal Timing for three Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batata L.) Cultivars” won first place for grad student competition.
Purdue Today featured Cary Mitchell and Fatemeh Sheibani’s novel research on LED lighting in vertical farming was on February 21. Their research designed two simple strategies that would increase yield while reducing costs in vertical farming, the fastest growing sector in controlled environment agriculture. Other media outlets picked up the story, including Indiana Public Media.
HORT 49100 Bedding Plant Production students are working with the crops that are in production in the HLA greenhouse. These will become part of the Horticulture Club Plant Sale to take place during Purdue’s Spring Fest on April 15. This is experiential learning for a good cause! Thank you HORT 491 students!
Lauren Harmon, an undergraduate HLA student working with the Widhalm Lab, has been awarded $500 from the Purdue College of Agriculture’s Office of Academic Programs to offset the cost of her undergraduate research project. Congratulations Lauren!
