How do the properties of words in a toddler's vocabulary influence their interest and recognition of the words they know? We explore how sensory connections between words in toddler vocabulary networks influence attention and processing of words in a new paper out today in Brain Sciences - freely available here: www.mdpi.com/2076-3425/11/2/163
We are excited to start up the Spring Semester at Purdue! We have new Research Assistants joining our team and want to welcome them together! Ann Marie is a junior from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin studying Neurobiology and Physiology with a minor in psychology. She aspires to become a pediatric neurologist. She loves working with children and wants to understand how children's brains change and adapt as they learn to communicate. In her free time, she loves running, hiking, kayaking, crafting, and spending time with friends and family.
Exciting news to start off the new year! So proud of graduate students Michelle and Justin for their accepted poster and talk to Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) meeting this Spring. Stay tuned for more details about their work as we get closer to the date! 🎉🎉
Today, we are celebrating the graduation of our two undergraduate research assistants, Ally and Aris. We are so proud of all their hard work in and out of the lab. Ally is currently applying to Speech-Language Pathology programs to start in the fall, and Aris will be starting at the University of Melbourne in March 2021 to pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Audiology. They have learned and grown so much, and we can't wait to see all the impressive accomplishments they will achieve in the future!
Each year, Oxford English Dictionary chooses a single word or phrase to define the year. As 2020 has been a unique year in many ways, OED decided to highlight dozens of terms rather than picking one. Check out this cool report to find out some of the defining terms of 2020 and its impact on our vocabulary. Some might say there are no words to sum up the events of 2020. At Oxford University Press, we think there are too many. That’s why this year, the OED Word of the Year looks rather different...![]()
Rather than selecting a single word, Oxford Languages are delighted to announce the 'Words of an Unprecedented Year 2020 Report'. Click here to start reading -> oxelt.gl/2UQejKf![]()

Toddlers often encounter new items they can't yet name, but are similar to objects they already know. Does this similarity help or confuse vocabulary learning? We find that similar words are harder to map on an initial encounter, but helps toddlers remember the words later. Paper out now in Developmental Science. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/desc.12963
We are planning word learning studies that families can complete at home with their toddlers. Contact us at llamalab@purdue.edu or message us on Facebook to get on the list to take part.

As a parent or caregiver, I am here because ... I care about my child having a healthy racial identity while appreciating and respecting others. I want to learn more about how to help my child navigate the complexities of race. I believe my child can be an agent of change against racial inequity. Ea...
As our nation confronts racial inequality and injustice, many families may feel at a loss for how to talk to their children about recent events. Developmental science suggests that children start to shape their understanding of race and privilege even in infancy. We at the LLAMA lab feel it is never too early to broach topics that encourage little ones to build kindness and empathy for our fellow humans. ![]()
