Application Information

All applicants to our Ph.D. programs must apply on-line by filling out the Graduate School application forms at We do NOT offer terminal Master's degree programs and only accept applications from those seeking a Ph.D. There are no additional forms for financial support. There is a $60 application fee for domestic applicants and a $75 application fee for international applicants.

Application Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School, you should have:

(1) a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;

(2) a strong scholastic record;

(3) the GRE general test is required (no minimum score requirement);

(4) an overall score of 80 or higher on the Internet-based version, (TOEFL iBT), plus Written: 18 Listening: 14, Speaking: 18 and Reading: 19 or an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. {non-native English speakers only}.

NOTE: The Graduate School will routinely waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement for applicants who have received a baccalaureate degree or graduate or professional degree, within the last 36 months of the date of admission, from a school where English is the primary language of instruction in a country/location where English is the native language.

Students enter the graduate program in the Fall semester only. To be given consideration for Fall 2022 admission and financial aid, the completed application (i.e., the application, letters of recommendation, transcripts, scores, statement) must be received no later than December 1, 2021.

Supplemental Instructions for Completing Graduate School On-Line Application

The application should note the following:

'DEPARTMENT/GRADUATE MAJOR,' This question asks applicants to indicate the specific subject area/graduate major in which they wish to major within the Department of Psychological Sciences. The indicated graduate major is extremely important because faculty associated with the graduate major will make all recommendations regarding student admission and graduate appointments.  You must apply to one of the following Graduate Majors:

Clinical Psychological Sciences

Cognitive Psychology

Industrial-Organizational Psychology

Mathematical and Computational Psychology

Neuroscience and Behavior

Social Psychology

To assist students in making this determination, we provide a description of the Graduate Majors in which the department offers graduate programs.

'Degree or Enrollment Objective,' Applicants should indicate their ultimate degree objective by marking "Doctoral."

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required and MUST be submitted via the on-line application program. Two of the letters should come from persons qualified to evaluate the student's scholarly potential. If possible, the third should be submitted by someone qualified to describe and evaluate the student's work experience. Once you complete the recommendation portion of the application, your recommenders will automatically be sent an E-mail request for the letter of recommendation which will direct them to the recommendation form template.


You must upload to your online application an official version of transcript(s) for every institution of higher education that you have attended. If a transcript is not in English, you must upload an English translation certified by the college or university which issued it.  Please do NOT send hard-copy transcripts to the Graduate School.

The uploaded transcript and/or academic document must be from the official version of the document. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. Statement of Purpose

You must upload a personal statement that describes your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue, and your research interests, professional plans, and career goals. You also may also explain any special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on your scholarly publications, awards, achievements, abilities, and/or professional history. It is also helpful to explain why you chose particularly Faculty under the "Faculty of Interest" field of the application.  While the application recommends that the Statement of Purpose be 300-500 words, we will accept statements that are up to two single-spaced pages.        

Diversity Essay

The diversity essay is required of ALL applicants and should respond to the following statement:

Describe your leadership, work experience, service experience, or other significant involvement with racial, ethnic, socio-economic, or educational communities that have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education, and how these experiences would promote a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence. You should feel free to discuss your own personal experiences in the essay.


When the applicant's file is complete, it will be reviewed by the faculty of the appropriate area. If a fellowship is involved, the applicant is notified by March 15. Final action on all applications is completed by April 1.
