My responsibilities as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion include serving as the faculty leader on diversity and inclusion efforts throughout our department; developing new initiatives aimed at promoting a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion among our faculty, staff, and students; chairing our department's newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee; overseeing a new Graduate Student Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and working in collaboration with other department leaders, specifically our Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Graduate Studies, to promote diversity and inclusion throughout our undergraduate and graduate curricula.
I believe firmly that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential in creating a vibrant, productive, and enthusiastic academic community. Striving for and achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion will make our Department a welcoming home to everyone, and will result in creativity, productivity, collaboration, and more importantly, a feeling that we are all acknowledged, respected, and belong here.
For over 25 years, I have examined the causes and consequences of ostracism—being ignored and excluded. All forms of discrimination, marginalization, social invisibility, and prejudice have at their core a motive to exclude and ignore, thus undermining and preventing inclusion, authenticity, efficacy, and success. I have taught seminars on Ostracism for over 20 years and have given talks, workshops, and seminars internationally on the topic. My research is featured in the documentary Reject. I also serve as a University Faculty Catalyst, ensuring that diversity, inclusion, and equity are goals we aspire to for our students, and in the hiring, retention, and nurturing of faculty, post-docs, graduate students, and staff. I am or have served as a member of the University Faculty Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, and the College of Health and Human Sciences Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.
