Botanicals and Bioactives for Health

Purdue University has a distinguished reputation in nutrition and pharmacognosy research which dates back many decades. With the advent of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, the use of botanicals has greatly increased, in some cases, without sufficient concern for safety of intake of various types. The research technology developed in the Purdue-University of Alabama, Birmingham Botanicals Center for Age Related Diseases, led by Nutrition Science, was used to partner with Mt. Sinai Medical School to create an NIH Center for Excellence Research for grape-derived polyphonies and Alzheimer Disease from 2006 until 2014. Work continues under grants from the National Institutes of Health and industry funding.

The engagement portion of the NIH Botanicals Center for Age Related Diseases has been working collaboratively in support of the research projects and other activities and in developing educational programs for professionals. The engagement program has focused on developing websites and Internet-based programs on botanicals:


With the strength of the faculty interests, a graduate course in polyphenolics is taught. A sophomore research experience on functional foods was added to the foods course, NUTR 20500.  Members of the Botanical Research Center offer workshops on research techniques used in botanical research.
