Discovery

Lipid metabolism plays a critical role in the supply of fuel to various tissues, and it is physiologically important to alter the rate of lipid shuttling between tissues and cellular compartments as energy needs change throughout the day.  Improper  regulation of lipid metabolism leads to enhanced risk for metabolic and cardiovascular disease.  My laboratory studies lipid metabolism at a biochemical level and in vivo, with focus on lifestyle factors such as energy balance, exercise, and diet selection.  Specifically, we study responses of free fatty acid mobilization, lipoprotein kinetics, and accumulation of various lipids within tissues such as the liver.  The overall goal is to understand how lipid metabolism responds to physiological stressors and healthful lifestyle factors.
