DNP, Vanderbilt University

MSN, Duke University

BAN, St. Olaf College

Joy graduated from St. Olaf College in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing and a concentration in Management Studies. Her first job as an RN was on the Surgical/Trauma/Neuroscience Unit at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. She loved the fast-paced environment and complex patient care provided at this Level 1 trauma center. She then moved around the country as a military spouse and worked on various surgical units at multiple hospitals. Always having a passion for anatomy and physiology, she eventually landed her dream job in the operating room. In 2008, Joy earned a Master of Science in Nursing from Duke University, with a major in Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Her career path then led her to several nurse educator and management roles, eventually bringing her back to the county medical center in Minneapolis as the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

Beginning with her first job as a new graduate, Joy has always had a passion for teaching. Maintaining patient safety as the focus, she comes alongside her students to prepare them for a successful nursing career by instructing them in the art and science of nursing. She joined the faculty at Purdue University School of Nursing in 2016. Having a continued desire to learn and excel in the profession, particularly in the area of healthcare quality improvement, she returned to school and earned her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Vanderbilt University in 2020, with a major in Executive Leadership.

Joy and her husband Andy have a son and a daughter. She enjoys time with her family, travel, and photography.
