Biography
Kristen Kirby is a Clinical Associate Professor, an ANCC board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, a Certified Nurse Educator and she is certified in LEAN Quality Improvement. She has over 15 years of clinical experience and almost 10 years of teaching experience. She has working knowledge of both a private practice family medicine office as well as the inner workings of a federally qualified health center. She is a prenatal care coordinator and was the Prenatal Substance Use Prevention Program Director for 3 years. Kristen has been teaching in the undergraduate program at Purdue since 2010. She currently teaches didactic and clinical courses in Health Assessment, Essentials of Nursing Practice I & II, and Public Health. She is a recipient of the Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Education Award for the School of Nursing in 2017, a three-time recipient of the School of Nursing’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2012, 2013, and 2014, a fellow of the Instruction Matters Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT), and a fellow for Teaching for Tomorrow at Purdue University.
The foundation of Professor Kirby’s nursing pedagogy is to bridge the academic to practice gap, create effective active learning environments which model innovative evidence-based solutions to everyday didactic and clinical issues and help students to recognize their voice within nursing and among the healthcare system. Kristen’s doctoral work is focused around the infusion of diversity and inclusion into the undergraduate program and transforming inclusive excellence in the classroom to positive patient health outcomes.
