Tell us about yourself:

I am currently a staff sergeant in the Air Force Reserves and work as a dental assistant. The public health aspect of this position has always been of importance to me as dentistry is a field of medicine that in many ways is very preventable, yet I continue to see patients that choose not to take care of their oral health. As an undergraduate I was able to volunteer with Medlife and visit Lima, Peru. While there I assisted various medical professionals as they provided care for some of the poorest individuals. It became very apparent during my time there how hard it is for some people to receive adequate healthcare.

Your education:

I earned my Bachelor of Science in biochemistry with a minor in psychology here at Purdue.

Your vision:

I plan to attend dental school after my MPH. I believe with a background in public health I will be able to better serve my patients. As a dentist, I would like to be active within the community and help influence better health policies. While I wouldn’t want to lose my job, dentistry is one of the more preventable health topics, and I would love to see an increase in better daily oral hygiene.

Why Purdue:

I love how enthusiastic the professors are while teaching. It creates a wonderful and encouraging environment to learn in. The flexibility of the classes and the way they are scheduled are very beneficial for pursuing other activities and opportunities.
