Academic Units

The Public Health Graduate Program (PHGP) at Purdue collaborates with partners from the Purdue academic units below to ensure success for our students and researchers. 

Department of Consumer Science (CSR)

Consumer Science faculty are investigating the profound effects that social inequities such as food insecurity and access to healthcare have on the health and well-being of marginalized populations. Working in partnership with HHS Extension and various units across Purdue’s campus, our researchers are amplifying the voices of disenfranchised individuals and communities to promote health policy change. Our Health and Social Justice Program challenges students to address the complexities of health inequities and disparities. This multidisciplinary program conveys theoretical and practical insights drawn from various disciplines. The program is designed to equip students with the tools necessary to conduct community- and population-based research and evaluation and to develop health programs and interventions that bring about health and social justice.

Department of Health and Kinesiology (HK)

As a founding partner in Purdue’s Public Health program, the Department of Health and Kinesiology (HK) is focused on helping individuals and communities achieve optimum health. Our mission is to enhance quality of life across the lifespan. By bringing together faculty with expertise in social, behavioral and physical sciences, Health and Kinesiology is leading interdisciplinary initiatives in the areas of public health and human movement. We are proud to work with communities to improve lives through informing healthy behavioral choices that move the world forward to a healthier tomorrow.

School of Health Sciences (HSCI)

The School of Health Sciences’ research and educational programs are designed to train future professionals and skilled workers in careers oriented toward improving public health, protecting the environment in which we work and live, and advancing allied healthcare. Our researchers and scholars participate in predominantly NIH-funded environmental health research that addresses all physical, chemical and biological factors impacting human health by discovering the means for assessment and control of those environmental factors. HSCI facilities, including innovative animal models, cutting-edge molecular and genetic methodologies, sophisticated analytical instruments, advanced laser-based microscopic imaging techniques, novel in-house designed and developed metal detection equipment, and ready access to an MRI/PET imaging facility provide an ideal environment for training students in public health.

School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM)

HTM’s role in Purdue’s Public Health Program is to examine hospitality and tourism issues that can directly influence public health, including nutrition labeling on menus, employee behaviors in the workplace (e.g., handwashing), the development of food safety management systems, the cleanliness of hotel rooms, and emergency preparedness and recovery. HTM faculty also exam the restorative properties of destinations and tourism activities. The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is housed in Marriott Hall, and provides leadership for three centers that examine issues that can affect public health: the Arthur C. Avery Foodservice Research Center; the Center for the Study of Lodging Operations; and the Purdue Tourism and Hospitality Research Center.

Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)

Establishing and maintaining social ties is essential to human health and survival. HDFS’ role in Purdue’s Public Health Program is to offer expertise in the understanding of how social relationships and developmental processes impact health across the lifespan. HDFS provides support and leadership for Purdue’s Center for Families, Military Family Research Institute, and Ben and Maxine Miller Child Development Laboratory School. HDFS faculty are engaged in multidisciplinary initiatives throughout the University, including the Center on Aging and the Life Course, the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, and the Ingestive Behavior Research Center.

School of Nursing (NUR)

As the largest healthcare profession, nurses impact public health in local and global arenas. Purdue School of Nursing’s focus on innovative healthcare systems, health promotion and chronic disease management are significant for improving public health. Several faculty hold leadership positions within the American Public Health Association and other health-related organizations impacting public policy. Two of our three nurse-managed primary care clinics are Federally Qualified Health Clinics (FQHC) and serve as patient-centered medical facilities for underserved populations. These two rural clinics are an integral part of improving the health outcomes of the communities in which they are located. The School of Nursing provides strong support to the Master of Public Health Program through faculty collaboration in innovative transdisciplinary health services research, education and engagement.

Department of Nutrition Science (NUTR)

Nutrition is fundamental to health and poor choices can be linked to a variety of negative health outcomes. The Department of Nutrition Science (NUTR) addresses public health issues in four signature areas: appetite, metabolism and obesity; cancer prevention; bone health; and botanicals for age-related diseases. Further, a close partnership with Health and Human Sciences Extension facilitates translation of departmental discoveries. Nutrition also provides leadership for the Women’s Global Health Institute, the Ingestive Behavior Research Center and the Cancer Prevention Interdisciplinary Education Program. With more than 13,000 square feet of newly renovated training space, Nutrition Science is a strong resource for Purdue’s Public Health Program.

Department of Psychological Sciences (PSY)

A number of significant public health challenges revolve around individual human behavior. For example, understanding the determinants of cigarette smoking and other behaviors that impact health has implications for the design and application of public health efforts to decrease unhealthy behaviors and increase healthy ones. As one of the leading research psychology departments in the United States, and the largest unit within the College of Health and Human Sciences, the Department of Psychological Sciences has expertise in core areas of the discipline, including several with direct relevance to public health concerns (e.g., behavioral neuroscience, clinical psychology and social psychology).

Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS)

Communication is central to human health and well-being. The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences undertakes the study of human communication sciences and disorders. Speech, language and hearing, as well as essential functions of swallowing and balance are explored through all stages of the lifespan. Evidence-based practice and research are central emphases of the programs. Prevention and early intervention are emphasized whenever possible. Because research in speech, language and hearing sciences is inherently interdisciplinary, faculty from units throughout campus are active research collaborators. SLHS is located in Lyles-Porter Hall, which houses state-of-the art research facilities and a rich network of interprofessional health education concerning prevention and treatment.

Department of Statistics (STAT)*

Recent advances in technology have provided the opportunity to use large and complex data to address major public health issues via the use of computing, quantitative thinking and statistics. As a result, biostatistics, with an emphasis on tools needed for collecting, organizing and analyzing data, has become an increasingly essential component of public health research. The demand for professionals with these analytical skills, as well as the ability to communicate clearly and work in teams, will continue to grow. Purdue University is ideal for the development of such professionals. Strengths include the prevalence of life science research as a major focus in many of its colleges and a culture that values quantitative approaches to problem-solving. This mission is supported by many centers on campus including Bindley Bioscience Center, Center for the Environment, Discovery Learning Research Center and Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering.
