Research is focused on sexual harassment of hospitality students and women in the hospitality industry.

Biography

Dr. Joseph "Mick" La Lopa has been a member of the faculty in the Department of Hospitality and Management since 1996. Mick has a passion for teaching and research. He is a highly decorated teacher who has been the recipient of every major teaching award in or related to his field at the department, school, university, and national level. Of all the awards he has received, none compares to being inducted into the Fairport High School Wall of Fame (high school alma mater) in recognition of the achievements he has made in his personal life, education, and career since graduating.

Dr. La Lopa spent many years focusing on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and made a significant impact on hospitality/culinary education through publications, online teaching certifications, and presentations/workshops all over the world. He has recently shifted his attention to sexual harassment in the hospitality industry, especially of females, because it continues to be a major problem in the hospitality industry despite the laws and legislation that have been enacted to prevent it. In the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement, and that 60+% of hospitality students are female, La Lopa’s research focuses on ways to help the hospitality industry evolve into a more professional workplace where the rights of everyone to earn a living, free of harassment, is ensured. His groundbreaking research on the sexual harassment of hospitality student interns, which is a Title IX violation of student rights, has already led to changes being made to the way students are prepared by hospitality programs all across the country to successfully complete an internship free of harassment, and if harassed, the proper steps to take to end it.

Professor La Lopa earned the Murphy Award within four years of joining the faculty in the HTM Department; he has since won numerous other teaching awards and honors, which led to being inducted into Purdue’s Great Book of Teachers in 2008.

  • 2016 Nominated Most Outstanding Faculty – awarded to the faculty member who demonstrates strengths on pillars of service, research and teaching
  • 2014 Academic Connection award. This inaugural award recognizes a Learning Community instructor team who excelled at planning events and activities that directly connect classroom learning with hands-on experiences.
  • 2013 Dr. Richard M. Marecki Memorial Award for devotion to lifelong learning. November 2013.

  • 2005 I was granted a courtesy appointment in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, in the School of Education, to work with faculty and students. This was a great honor and opportunity since La Lopa teaches in the HTM department.
  • 2005 Service Learning Faculty Fellow. This award was given to five Purdue faculty for 2005 to help spread the use of Service Learning here on campus. This is a great honor as only 15 will be selected in a three year period to get the award.
  • 2003 John Wiley & Sons Award for Innovation in Teaching. The award recognizes an International CHRIE member for the individual’s implementation of innovative, creative, and effective teaching techniques in hospitality education at the high school, diploma, and college or university level.
