About Health & Kinesiology

Warm Greetings! Thank you for your inquiry into our world. Although the Department of Health and Kinesiology has a relatively short history under its present structure that dates back to 1976, our roots are grounded in the 1920s with the formation of separate departments of Women's Physical Education and Men's Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramurals and Physical Education. Its rich history of scholarship, teaching, and service has paved the way for an exciting future into the 21st century.

The Department of Health and Kinesiology is one of nine departments within the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University with a unique set of responsibilities:

  • The preparation of scholars who will contribute to knowledge and understanding of human behavior across the life span within the contexts of health, movement, and sport sciences, and health and fitness;
  • The preparation of professionals as teachers, coaches, athletic trainers, health education/promotion specialists, and health and fitness service providers and managers;
  • And more importantly, the preparation of students who seek knowledge, experiences, and skills in various areas of study (i.e., athletic training; health and fitness; exercise physiology; exercise psychology; sport, fitness and health management; sport and health pedagogy; motor development; biomechanics; motor control; and others).

The Department of Health and Kinesiology is committed to extending and enhancing its academic reputation by strengthening research and scholarship, offering curricula consistent with contemporary knowledge and practices, attracting and preparing highly qualified students, and concentrating its energies on developing and maintaining programs of excellence. Programs of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels lead to Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Approximately 750 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students are enrolled in the department.

The Department of Health and Kinesiology recognizes its obligation to maintain a spirit of community, support depth and breadth of scholarly interests and diversity of ideas, and foster cooperative efforts in scholarship, teaching, and service. It recognizes its obligation to contribute to society and the quality of life relative to its responsibilities and commitments.
