Thesis & Dissertation: Defending and Depositing

Be sure to inform the Graduate Secretary that you are a candidate for graduation the semester you plan to graduate.

Final Defense

  • Students MUST notify the graduate secretary when the final defense is scheduled with their exam committee and the Administrative Assistant - no less than three weeks prior with final exam information (date, time, location, title, committee members). This information is crucial to submitting paperwork in a timely manner.

          Note: If your outside the department committee member is not a Purdue faculty member, see the HDFS Graduate Manual for
          information about special certification that needs to be done before scheduling your final defense.

  • The graduate student or graduate secretary submits an electronic Request for Appointment of Examining Committee (GS Form 8) at least three weeks prior to the final exam. This request must be received by the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to the requested final exam date (a Graduate School requirement).

  • The electronic GS Form 9: Thesis/Dissertation Acceptance form should appear in your myPurdue account once the GS Form 8 is approved. Complete the Form 9: Thesis/Dissertation Acceptance form and electronically "submit" it.

  • Prior to submitting the final document to the committee, the major professor must certify that it reflects the student's original work (Certification of Original Work). The advisor completes the iThenticate check and meets with the student to discuss the results. The student will revise the document as needed, prior to providing it to committee members.

  • Defend the Thesis/Dissertation   The GS Form 7: Report of Master's Examining Committee or the GS Form 11: Report of PhD Final Examination will be generated automatically and signed electronically by your committee members. Your exam committee members and the Head of the Graduate Program will also need to electronically sign your GS Form 9: Thesis/Dissertation Acceptance form.

  • Summer Thesis/Dissertation Defenses   Students may schedule a final defense during the summer. However, because most faculty have academic year appointments only, their participation in summer defenses is at the discretion of individual faculty members. Faculty who receive summer support from external research grants may be prohibited from participating in summer defenses.

Final Thesis/Dissertation Deposit
