Biography

I graduated from the Medical School of the University of Turku, Finland in 2011. I have mainly worked as a physician in primary health care in the town of Harjavalta, Finland. During my specialization studies for General Practice, I also worked in pediatric neurology, pulmonology, and neurology at the Turku University Hospital as well as a clinical lecturer for one semester in General Practice at the University of Turku. I finished my specialization in General Practice in 2018.

I started my research career while I was studying medicine and finished my doctoral thesis entitled Smoking during pregnancy and fetal brain development in 2013. Since then, I have continued studying the effects of prenatal smoking exposure on child health and presented several presentations from my findings on smoking and pregnancy in Finland. I am a member of the Scientific Committee of the Tobacco-Free Finland 2030 and the Society for Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

I accepted a Visiting Scholar position with Professor Valerie Knopik in September 2018 to work on the Missouri Mothers and Their Children Study (MO-MATCH). This is the first specifically designed family study to leverage the sibling comparison approach to the effects of prenatal smoking exposure on child attention problems and associated learning and cognitive deficits. I am particularly interested in learning how to disentangle the effects of prenatal smoking exposure from genetic and environmental factors by using the case-crossover design (or within-mother, between-pregnancy), which examines siblings discordant for prenatal smoking exposure. I will also study the effects of smoking exposure by using cutting-edge methodology on epigenetic changes possibly mediating these child neurocognitive outcomes.
