Mukerjea's duties included assisting university leaders – the president, provost, vice presidents, chancellors and academic deans – with campus resource management plans that cross all schools and functions to encompass the entire university. After working as an architect in Calcutta, India, and then as a member of an architectural design team in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Mukerjea served as a lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo.

Mukerjea joined Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor of Architecture in 1971. He became a Professor of Architecture in 1982 and served as the Interim Dean in the College of Design twice. When Jischke became President of Purdue University he hired Mukerjea as the university’s Director of Strategic Planning.

In 2010, he was awarded The Order of the Griffin by President Córdova, who said of Mukerjea, "You have been unselfish and inspiring in leading us as we strive to reach our goals and beyond. You are an architect by discipline, and now, fittingly, you are the architect who shaped our goals and aspirations into a coherent design. We are extremely grateful for all you have done and continue to do for this great university."
