Warm greetings

Thank you for visiting the Purdue Acceptance and Inclusion Consortium and allowing me the chance to introduce you to this important research effort.

Most people know how it feels to be left out, ignored, ostracized, underestimated, or dehumanized by others. It has ripple effects on individual health and well-being and is linked to a litany of societal problems. Hopefully, we also know what it can feel like to be embraced and included by our peers. People thrive when they feel included and valued, and falter when they feel excluded or marginalized. From bullying behavior and interpersonal violence, to workplace inequity or political marginalization, the core of many social problems is rooted in perceptions of devaluation, marginalization, and lack of acceptance.

On the other hand, inclusion and acceptance provide a means for averting problems—and it engenders the conditions needed for people to flourish. Examples are everywhere. Research shows that partner support can encourage healthy behavioral choices and reduce disease. When students or employees experience more confidence or less anxiety their work outcomes improve. When orphans are adopted into secure and stable homes, their resiliency begins to blossom.

The experience of acceptance and inclusion, or lack thereof, has profound impact and is universally recognized across settings, cultures, and time periods.

It’s time that we bring that narrative to center stage.

Purdue University is uniquely positioned to launch a new discipline in the scientific study of acceptance. Under the College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS), the Purdue Acceptance and Inclusion Consortium represents a multi-disciplinary team of faculty from psychology, clinical neuroscience, sociology, human development, political science, and economics dedicated to advancing a research agenda on the topic of acceptance and inclusion, and to elevating the broader relevance and impact of research in the area.

We are comprised of faculty members who are world-renowned for their research on topics that relate to an acceptance and inclusion core. It is a privilege to have assembled a team with such breadth and depth of expertise that coalesces into a common science of acceptance and inclusion.

Under this, the Consortium has focused its studies in four core research topics: 1. The Science of Exclusion; 2. Interpersonal Belonging; 3. Educational, Organizational, and Political Inclusion; and 4. Inclusive Policies and Practices. I encourage you to explore each of core areas across our website and get involved where you can.

As we progress, the Consortium will be engaging with the local and national community through community talks and roundtables, news stories and interviews, newsletters, lectures, and more. Stay tuned to our website and mailing list to get involved and for the latest updates on our activities.

From children to workers, immigrants to international policy, inclusion and acceptance is central to so many of the complex and contentious issues facing our world today. Through the collaborative efforts of experts at Purdue and around the world, we look forward to an impending future where the science of inclusion takes a prominent role in the decision-making processes of individuals, organizations, institutions, and nations.
