Current Research Interests:

Research in the Donkin lab explores the control of hepatic function that is pertinent to food animal production, well-being, and human health. This research focuses on control of key enzymes for energy and glucose metabolism in liver and other metabolically dynamic tissues. Our lab has focused on understanding the regulation of pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase cytolsolic (PCK1), key enzymes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism during health and disease. We are working to define the role of PC and PCK1 gene promoter regulation and impact on TCA cycle activity during anaplerotic and cataplerotic states. Collaborations with other labs (The Teegarden lab in Nutrition Sciences) explore the role of vitamin D in energy partitioning, body composition, TCA cycle flux, and cancer cell biology.
