Dean Linda Mason sends message of support to Graduate School community, announces grant program to advance social justice and diversity

Linda J. Mason, Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Entomology

Recently, the senseless death of George Floyd demonstrates again that equality is not equally distributed and that racism exists in all parts of our personal and professional lives.  Additionally, the coronavirus pandemic has exasperated the social injustice that exists around the world.  Graduate education is all about pushing boundaries and creating knowledge. I know that creative solutions exist in the minds and hearts of the graduate student population at Purdue. Students in every discipline are needed to win the fight against the virus and social injustice. The future design of the systems, policies and innovations that guide us need your ideas and efforts.  You will provide amazing solutions to solve these societal problems. Your leaders, mentors and colleagues may not have all the answers, but know that we do care about you and these issues, and that we will support all the diverse voices in the academic and research environments at Purdue to find solutions. I encourage you to find ways to support, encourage and demonstrate kindness to others in these challenging times. We all need that right now.

To put action behind my words, I am announcing the Grant for Advancing Social Justice and Diversity in Graduate Education, a new grant program for graduate student teams to develop actionable ideas to advance social justice and diversity in graduate education at Purdue.  This is a program for graduate students with winning proposals chosen by graduate students. I will support three team projects with funding up to $5,000 each. Details are available on the Graduate School’s Office of Graduate Diversity Initiatives webpage.  I look forward to hearing your innovative ideas to move us forward.

Stay Safe, Stay Strong
