{"id":4714,"date":"2019-01-14T02:49:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T07:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/freeform\/ervibrations\/?page_id=4714"},"modified":"2019-01-15T23:30:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T04:30:23","slug":"rigid-body-modes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/freeform\/ervibrations\/chapter-ii-animations\/rigid-body-modes\/","title":{"rendered":"Rigid body modes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--This file created 4\/25\/04 5:31 PM by Claris Home Page version 2.0--><\/p>\n<h2>Systems with Rigid Body Modes<\/h2>\n<hr noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" \/>\n<p>Below is a set of simulation results for a two-DOF translational system having a rigid body mode resulting from zero initial stretch\/compression in the spring and initial velocities for the two masses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Note that the <i>rigid body mode<\/i> in this case has the two masses moving together with NO strain and NO oscillations (always true of a rigid body mode).<\/li>\n<li>The second mode is a <i>vibrational mode<\/i> corresponding to a frequency of the second natural frequency. Here the second mode has the two particles moving 180 degrees out of phase with respect to each other.<\/li>\n<li>The total response is a sum of the rigid body mode and the vibrational mode.
