class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lab interests<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>We are interested in environmental questions at the interface between applied and basic ecology. To address such questions we use an adaptive research approach and employ a variety of research methods (e.g., field sampling, controlled experiments, statistical analysis, simulation modeling). The focus of our research is fish and fisheries ecology in the Laurentian Great Lakes. However, we also study lower trophic level organisms and both smaller freshwater and larger marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Our research integrates field data, ecological modeling, and interdisciplinary approaches to address pressing questions in fisheries science and aquatic ecosystem management.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interested in joining our research group?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>If you are interested in joining the lab as a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or undergraduate researcher, feel free to reach out to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">thook@purdue.edu<\/span>. Please indicate why you are interested in joining the lab and include a CV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested graduate students can formally apply for graduate studies through the <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/department\/fnr\/\">Department of Forestry and Natural Resources<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/academics\/ogsps\/ese\/\">Ecological Sciences and Engineering<\/a> graduate program. However, prospective students are strongly encouraged to contact Tomas (thook@purdue.edu) before formally applying to one of these programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have had a large number of undergraduate researchers participate in the lab as independent study researchers, interns and research assistants. Participating in research as an undergraduate can be a valuable learning experience. This can help one determine if a career in research is of interest and can be a great way to build experience and develop professionally. Based on research in the lab, several undergraduate students have published journal articles and presented at scientific conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate students and post docs have been supported through various sources including university fellowships, external grants, external fellowships and departmental funding. This is the only institution responsible for fish monitoring in both inland and marine waters of Latvia, and it holds some of the longest fish monitoring time series.
