Conducting surveys regularly provides a better understanding of population trends over time and conducting them at the same time every other year helps to minimize disturbance. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/dnr\/fish-and-wildlife\/nongame-and-endangered-wildlife\/mammals\/?lid=tlv79ek3jtu5&amp;utm_source=braze_idnr&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Send%20Nongame%20Wildlife%20Fund%20News%20March%202026#Winter_Bat_Counts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"16\">surveys<\/a>\u00a0primarily target the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/species\/indiana-bat-myotis-sodalis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"17\">Indiana bat<\/a>, but also include counts for the gray bat, little brown bat, tricolored bat and big brown bat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/dnr\/fish-and-wildlife\/nongame-and-endangered-wildlife\/donate-to-the-indiana-nongame-wildlife-fund\/?lid=ud0j059v0hkc&amp;utm_source=braze_idnr&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Send%20Nongame%20Wildlife%20Fund%20News%20March%202026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"18\" data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Donations<\/a>\u00a0to the Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund help the DNR purchase equipment needed for surveys. One critical tool is digital cameras which enable biologists to spend less time in caves disturbing the bats and more time in the office viewing photos to obtain a more accurate count.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">While the data is still being tallied for the 2026 winter bat count, the impression DNR mammalogists have from this winter\u2019s surveys is that multiple bat species continue to show signs of population growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Want to help bats?
