{"id":28724,"date":"2024-05-01T14:58:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T18:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/?p=28724"},"modified":"2026-04-24T15:27:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:27:18","slug":"extension-specialist-brian-macgowan-receives-hoosier-wildlife-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/extension-specialist-brian-macgowan-receives-hoosier-wildlife-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Extension Specialist Brian MacGowan Receives Hoosier Wildlife Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/directory\/macgowan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian MacGowan<\/a>, Purdue extension wildlife specialist, has been honored with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.org\/indiana\/awards\/hoosier-wildlife-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Hoosier Wildlife Award<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.org\/indiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indiana chapter of The Wildlife Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosier Wildlife Award is given annually to recognize an individual who has made, or is making, a significant contribution to professional wildlife conservation in Indiana through research, management, law enforcement, education or administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Hoosier Wildlife Award recognizes Brian&#8217;s substantial work in the field of wildlife conservation and his dedication to the Indiana Chapter of The Wildlife Society,\u201d said Zachary Voyles, South Region Private Lands Supervisor for the Division of Fish and Wildlife. \u201cHis contributions to wildlife research, management and higher education have helped numerous wildlife management professionals become better equipped to manage wildlife in Indiana on behalf of its citizens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macgowan-hoosier-wildlife-award-w603.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"macgowan-hoosier-wildlife-award-w603\" data-rl_caption=\"macgowan-hoosier-wildlife-award-w603\" title=\"macgowan-hoosier-wildlife-award-w603\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28725 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macgowan-hoosier-wildlife-award-w603-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"Brian MacGowan, wildlife extension specialist, receives Hoosier Wildlife Award.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>MacGowan came to Purdue in 1995 to begin work on his master\u2019s degree in wildlife science under Dr.\u00a0Harmon \u201cMickey\u201d Weeks. His thesis was titled \u201cAvian responses to woodland habitats differentially impacted by deer browsing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After completing his master\u2019s in 1998, he joined the Purdue Extension staff as a wildlife specialist in 1999. He acted as extension co-coordinator for Purdue FNR from 2007 to 2015 and has served as the sole coordinator since 2015. MacGowan went on to complete his PhD on \u201cFacilitating management and decision-making on private and public forests in Indiana\u201d under Dr. Linda Prokopy in the spring of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In his time in FNR, he has been honored with the Outstanding Professional Staff Award twice (2005, 2010). He received the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/news\/department\/fnr\/2021\/01\/macgowan-honored-for-leadership-in-extension.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Purdue Cooperative Extension Specialists\u2019 Association (PUCESA) Leadership Award<\/a>\u00a0in 2021 for his leadership and contribution to the development of FNR 506 course \u201cTheory and Application of Natural Resources Extension Programming\u201d and the creation of the Natural Resources Extension program.<\/p>\n<p>During his career, MacGowan has conducted meaningful research, teaching, and extension programming that has advanced wildlife conservation in Indiana, the Midwest, and more broadly. His contributions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organizing over 180 workshops, seminars, and field tours related to wildlife conservation.<\/li>\n<li>Delivering over 400 Extension presentations and 60 research presentations and posters.<\/li>\n<li>Publishing 75 Extension publications, articles, videos, and book chapters.<\/li>\n<li>Publishing 14 peer-reviewed research publications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MacGowan\u2019s impressive portfolio spans a wide variety of topics from human-wildlife conflict, wildlife damage management, reptile response to forest management, youth natural resources education, and evaluating the impact of extension scholarship. He has been honored for his extension programs and deliverables throughout his career. He won the Agricultural Communications in Education Gold Award twice: for electronic publications \u201cSnakes of the Midwest\u201d in 2005 and for website \u201cEverything Wildlife\u201d in 2003. He also received the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals (ANREP) Gold Award for mixed materials \u201cWildlife CSI Unraveling the Mysteries of Wildlife Crop Damage\u201d in 2007. He also earned the ANREP Silver Award for video\/DVD\/CD and for web-based courses for \u201cWildlife CSI Unraveling the Mysteries of Wildlife Crop Damage\u201d in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>MacGowan has been a member of the Indiana Woodland Steward Editorial Board since 2007, is the editor of the Indiana Woodland Steward newsletter and has served as the project investigator for the Renewable Resources Extension Act (RREA) in Indiana. He also organizes the yearly Ohio Valley Woodlands and Wildlife Workshop, conducts professional development workshops for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other conservation partners and shares his knowledge at many extension events throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>MacGowan was instrumental in producing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/woodland-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodland Stewardship for Landowners video series<\/a>. He also\u00a0shared his knowledge on\u00a0several editions of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLgoGnq-fak7XTwtV_1BLQt24xhCbMpm6W&amp;si=RVMM3_RcNLBE0y67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FNR Ask An Expert<\/a>\u00a0and provided instructional assistance regarding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WR8qRYoxu3A?si=h30pZi2cJX_LnsFl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protecting plants and shrubs from wildlife<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TA7d0KSmFIw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to stop woodland animals from digging in your flowerpots<\/a>, deer fencing,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-78-1cKPoWw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hummingbirds<\/a>\u00a0and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed, especially knowing who has received this honor before me,\u201d MacGowan said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the highlights of my professional career.\u00a0 Working at Purdue, and really in the wildlife profession, has put me in the position to work with some outstanding individuals. You hope that you have made a difference in people\u2019s lives during your career. I got into the wildlife profession because I loved the outdoors. But, it\u2019s the people you work with every day that makes it special. I\u2019m extremely appreciative and humbled by this honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources affiliated winners of the Hoosier Wildlife Award include current or emeritus faculty members Dr. Rob Swihart (2016), Dr. Harmon \u201cMickey\u201d Weeks (2006) and Dr. Russell E.
