Are they still emerging or is it safe to uncover my tender trees?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you haven&#8217;t seen or heard any 17-year cicadas near your trees yet, there probably won&#8217;t be any emerging there this year. You should be safe to take off the netting now, but I&#8217;d still suggest learning the signs of cicada egg laying damage and keeping an eye on any trees you&#8217;re worried about. The damage typically looks like a row of small holes in the bark connected by cracks (exp.\u00a0<span class=\"loader-wrapper\"><a class=\"sc-iwsKbI iabMoN\" title=\"Periodical Cicada (Magicicada septendecim)\" role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestryimages.org\/browse\/detail.cfm?imgnum=0488037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"inline-card-resolved-view\"><span class=\"sc-bxivhb bHwUNt\"><span class=\"sc-gzVnrw ihWlyP\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"smart-link-icon sc-hSdWYo BpKNu\" src=\"https:\/\/www.forestryimages.org\/favicon.ico\" \/><\/span><span class=\"sc-dnqmqq bDsesi\">periodical cicada (Magicicada septendecim<\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span>\u00a0but it can vary depending on the species of plant.
