Researchers at Oregon State University\u2019s College of Forestry noted over the last 30 years that temperature increases during the breeding season limited population growth for two tracked species; Wilson\u2019s warbler (<em>Cardellina pusilla<\/em>) and the hermit warbler (<em>Setophaga occidentalis<\/em>). These effects were mitigated in areas containing significant proportions of old-growth forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/birds.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/birds-500x217.png\" alt=\"Hermit Warbler and Wilson Warbler\" width=\"500\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/birds-500x217.png 500w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/birds-250x108.png 250w, https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/fnr\/extension\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/birds.png 549w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using satellite imagery of the research areas allowed the research team, led by Matthew Betts, to calculate approximate distances to old-growth forests along each 25mi survey route. Their findings provide support for the importance of old-growth forest conservation in our current changing climate.
