We invite applications for the position of Head of the Department of English at Purdue University. Undergraduates have 5 program options within the English department: literature, creative writing, professional writing, education, and linguistics. At the graduate level, the department offers an M.A.; an M.F.A. in Creative Writing; and the Ph.D. in five areas: Literature, Theory, and Culture; English Language and Linguistics; Rhetoric and Composition; English Education; and Second Language Studies/ESL. Faculty are also involved in such interdisciplinary programs as African American Studies, American Studies, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.  Fifty-four tenured or tenure-track faculty, 4 continuing lecturers, 23 limited-term lecturers, 3 administrative professional staff members, and 8 clerical staff employees, along with approximately 140 graduate students comprise the unit.

Required qualifications:  Terminal degree (Ph.D., M.F.A., D.F.A) in any of the areas represented in the Department of English at Purdue (Creative Writing, Literature, Theory, and Culture; English Language and Linguistics; Rhetoric and Composition; English Education; and Second Language Studies/ESL). 

Preferred qualifications:  Experience supervising and mentoring faculty, graduate students, and staff. Experience with managing substantial budgets. Experience working at a land-grant university. Ability to attract, mentor, and retain faculty and promote our department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

Required duties:  Manage department resources. Recruit and retain personnel. Guide faculty working toward tenure and promotion. Advocate on behalf of the Department’s mission and represent the department to the Office of the Dean and Council of Department Heads.
