003751-2017 - Head of School of Languages and Cultures

We welcome applications for the position of Head of the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University at the level of tenured full professor.  The School of Languages and Cultures is part of the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue and consists of five departments: Spanish and Portuguese; French; German and Russian; East Asian Languages; as well as American Sign Language, Arabic, Classics, Hebrew, and Italian.  Forty faculty members and more than one-hundred lecturers and graduate assistants constitute SLC, which grants undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in French, German, Japanese, Applied Linguistics, and Spanish, and offers undergraduate programs in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, and Russian.  Faculty in the department are also involved in such interdisciplinary programs as African American Studies, Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, Film and Video Studies, Jewish Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Linguistics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Philosophy and Literature, and Women’s Studies.  SLC is well-positioned at Purdue, which is a Research I university, has one of the largest international student population among US public universities, and has identified globalization through international research and collaborations as a strategic goal.

The Head of SLC has leadership responsibility for the entire unit, including recruiting and retaining departmental personnel, overseeing the process of promotion and tenure, allocating the budget, and representing the department to the Office of the Dean and the council of department heads.  The Head regularly teaches a course in one of the areas mentioned above.  The Head is appointed by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and reports to the Dean.  The 12-month appointment begins on July 1, 2018, is initially for five years, and is renewable.  


an earned doctorate in any of the languages specified above or closely related field; a distinguished scholarly record; evidence of excellent teaching; faculty experience in a program granting advanced degrees; qualifications for appointment at the rank of full professor; leadership ability, as well as prior administrative experience.


Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
