Purdue University invites applications and nominations for Dean, College of Education. Formed in 1989, the College of Education is a flourishing academic community embedded in an outstanding scientific community, making major contributions to educational scholarship and human talent development. Our mission is to discover and develop human potential through groundbreaking educational research and teacher preparation. Faculty represent an impressive group of scholars, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers actively working to make education accessible and equitable for all students. A hallmark of the College is its commitment to removing barriers to quality education, to help students achieve at the best of their ability and to provide the opportunities that education affords to all with a purposeful focus on two signature areas: K-12 STEM Education and Social Justice and Diversity.

Established in 1869, Purdue is Indiana’s land-grant university, a comprehensive educational and research institution that is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). Purdue ranks fifth among public institutions in the United States. The West Lafayette Campus, located one hour north of Indianapolis and two hours south of downtown Chicago, has ten academic colleges with an enrollment of 41,500 students. Purdue’s strengths in Education, Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Liberal Arts, Management, and the Health and Human Sciences contribute to a robust research and educational environment.

The College of Education consists of two interdisciplinary academic departments offering teacher education, undergraduate, and graduate programs. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers programs in the areas of art education, curriculum studies, learning design and technology, agricultural education, consumer and family sciences, career and technical education, literacy and language, English education, English language learning, mathematics education, science education, and social studies education. The Department of Educational Studies offers programs in the area of counseling and development, educational psychology, special education, and educational leadership and policy studies. Additionally, the college provides leadership for interdisciplinary teacher education programs from the six colleges that collaborate on teacher preparation at Purdue University:  Science, Agriculture, Liberal Arts, Health and Human Sciences and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute.  Many faculty hold joint appointments in these partner colleges.

The college is comprised of approximately 1,375 students (552 undergraduate; 823 graduate), 135 faculty (57 tenured/tenure track), 58 staff and 16,000 alumni.  An additional 365 students are enrolled in teacher education programs across campus. The College is also home to nationally and internationally recognized centers focused on integrated STEM education, gifted education, social studies, literacy, technology, and evaluation and learning research. The College has launched rapidly growing digital education programs at the M.S. level in recent years, and looks to build a national leadership position in this space.  More information about the Purdue University College of Education may be found at www.education.purdue.edu/.

As the College’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Dean’s primary role is to provide exceptional vision and leadership and to foster a culture of academic excellence and inclusiveness appropriate for a land grant university in the 21st century with on-campus and digital education programs. The Dean actively represents the College to a variety of constituencies internal and external to the University. Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean works closely with the College’s associate and assistant deans, department heads, faculty, staff and student leaders to ensure the College’s learning and research activities are of the highest levels of excellence. Securing internal and external private financial resources to support the many programs, faculty, and facility needs of the College is an important responsibility of the Dean. The Dean works collaboratively with local and national educational leaders to advocate for equitable and high quality education for all students in Indiana and across the country, and also seeks and engages with global partners to foster meaningful educational opportunities around the world.

The successful candidate for the positon of Dean of the College of Education will possess the ability to speak the language of different disciplines, promote and support interdisciplinary research, engage multiple communities, and stimulate learning to capitalize on the diversity of the college. The Dean will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching.

Essential Qualifications

  • Be an excellent leader with a proven record of building a shared vision and the ability to set priorities, allocate resources, create a collaborative environment, engage in strategic planning, and achieve specific goals.
  • Have a strong academic record of achievement as a scholar and teacher appropriate for a tenured full professorship within one of the College’s departments, exemplifying the caliber of scholars the College expects to attract to Purdue.
  • Be an exceptional communicator.
  • Have deep knowledge, commitment and extensive experience with K-12 education.
  • Have expertise in addressing the needs of a diverse faculty, staff and students.
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice.
  • Have a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Be an effective fundraiser who can secure and allocate resources to support quality undergraduate and graduate instruction, research, public service and outreach activities
  • Have substantial experience with the national research funding environment.
  • Be able to connect with all the constituencies served by the University and be able to articulate and advocate for the goals of the College.
