Project Overview

Rationale
This INDOT research project develops implementation strategies for mobile barrier systems to improve highway work zone safety and operational efficiency. The study evaluates deployment limitations, roadway compatibility, worker and operator training, and suitable maintenance activities, providing practical guidance for integrating mobile barriers into stationary and mobile operations across diverse transportation environments.
Impact
- Improve construction work zone safety by supporting the reduction of worker injuries and fatalities on Indiana highways through the effective implementation of mobile barrier systems.
- Provide INDOT, contractors, and supervisors with a comprehensive implementation guidebook covering operational capabilities, deployment strategies, risks, costs, best practices, and lessons learned for mobile barrier adoption.
- Support workforce development by identifying training requirements, safety procedures, and operational recommendations needed for workers and operators to safely and efficiently use mobile barrier technology in roadway maintenance and construction projects.
