SUBJECT:      BoilerKey

Colleagues,

I’m writing to you today to inform you that the week of January 22 ITaP will begin its earnest push to get all Purdue employees registered for BoilerKey by April 1. I’ll lay out briefly some key talking points that pertain to the signup period and BoilerKey itself.

What is BoilerKey?

BoilerKey is an additional layer of security where you enter a password or PIN and then confirm your identity using a smartphone or physical token that is in your possession and available only to you. This is called two-factor authentication.

How does it work?

For all new set ups and installs, you’ll use the passphrase “4-digit PIN,push” in lieu of your career account password (e.g. “1234,push”) and confirm your identity on a physical device to sign into the Purdue employee portal. Users will also be able to generate a 6-digit code instead of “push” if their smartphone is unable to connect to the internet or they are using a physical token.

Why do I need it?

BoilerKey helps protect personal and University data accessible via the employee portal, such as bank account numbers, W-2s and personal addresses. Currently, if an employee’s password is compromised, all of that information could be stolen.

Where do I get it?

Visit purdue.edu/boilerkey to sign up.

Do I have to use it?

Yes, BoilerKey’s enforcement coincides with the SuccessFactors portion of HR’s Transformation Project. Signing up for BoilerKey now means that when the employee portal changes, you will already be prepared and using BoilerKey to sign in.

Where can I get help?

Resources for your employees include:

  • GoldAnswers
  • Tech Support (itap@purdue.edu or 44000)
  • YouTube instructional video (https://youtu.be/WH7iPJQqL1U)
  • In-person sign ups – schedule will be provided in future announcements
  • Academic IT units are prepared to assist as needed

Our goal is to have 100% of Purdue employees signed up by April 1. We will do a heavy push via social media, Purdue Today, and direct email.

We encourage and are open to any feedback you or your employees may have to improve the process. Please use the general ITaP email, itap@purdue.edu, for feedback regarding BoilerKey.
