  1. Form: In addition to the required training, you may be required to submit a completed user registration form to EHS. Please consult the table above to determine which form, if any, you are required to submit based on the type of project for which you will be working.
  2. Classroom Training: If listed, is considered mandatory, and must be completed following the online training and successful completion of the quiz. Please click the "Schedule" link to find out how to register for the classroom sessions, as well as their locations & times held.
  3. Recertification: If required, recertification is done in the Fall of all even years (e.g. 2010, 2012, 2014). If you completed the initial training after August 15 of the year of the retraining, then you do not need to complete the retraining until the next retraining cycle.
  4. DOT Training: This training is restricted to certain Purdue personnel. Most personnel at Purdue University are not authorized to transport radioactive material.

 60Co Irradiator Safety Training

Main Contact: Matthew Tang

All irradiator users must successfully complete this training. This training discusses the safety and operational issues associated with the unit. Retraining is completed on a 2-year basis, and is available online.

Initial Irradiator Safety Training is done by appointment only. Contact Matthew Tang to sign up.

Declared Pregnant Worker Training

Main Contact: Matthew Tang

Women who are pregnant and are in areas where radioactive materials or ionizing radiation-producing equipment are used may wish to declare their pregnancy to the Radiation Safety Office. To do this, the worker must complete this training. You may visit our Pregnancy & Radiation web page to obtain additional information.

Declared Pregnant Worker Training is done by appointment only. Contact Matthew Tang to sign up.

Laser Safety Training & Retraining

Main Contact: Matthew Tang

The laser safety training course is designed to instruct users of Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems on required topics as established by ANSI Z136.1 - 2007.

The only required training courses are for those users of Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems. This training program consists of an initial online "Laser Safety Training: Class 3B and Class 4 Lasers" course, followed by an abbreviated classroom session. Additionally, a “Laser Safety Refresher Training” is required every two years for laser users.

The classroom training schedule is only available to those who have completed the on-line training. Applicants will be prompted to sign up for the classroom session upon successful completion of the training. Please contact Matthew Tang for any questions.

Radiation Safety Training & Retraining

Main Contact: Matthew Tang

All users of unsealed radioactive materials (i.e. "open sources") are required to successfully complete the online training, as well as an additional 1 hour classroom session.

The classroom training schedule is only available to those who have completed the on-line training. Applicants will be prompted to sign up for the classroom session upon successful completion of the training. Please contact for any questions.

The "Radiation Safety Retraining" course requires completion every 2 years for these same users, and is available online.

Sealed Source Safety Training & Retraining

Main Contact: Matthew Tang

This training applies only to those who exclusively use sealed sources; isotope users must go through the complete radiation safety training course. This training focuses on important sealed source information such as sealed source and laboratory security, periodic leak testing, and inventory.

This initial training is available in online. You will need to submit the Form A-4 to the EHS office; to send the form in campus mail, address it to Sharon Rudolph/EHS/HAMP.

Retraining is completed on a 2-year basis, and is also available online.

X-Ray Safety Training: Analytical & Diagnostic

 Main Contact: Matthew Tang

The X-Ray Safety Training covers topics required for users of both analytical (e.g. crystallography), diagnostic (e.g. medical) x-ray, and irradiator units. This training is available online.

You will need to submit the Form A-4 to the EHS office; to send the form in campus mail, address it to Sharon Rudolph/EHS/HAMP.
