The Energy Center is please to welcome visitors from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan on July 31, 2014. We are honored to host Ta-Hui Lin, Ming-Hsu Wu, and Chung -Yao Hsuan.
We invite you to attend a lecture be both Dr. Wu and Dr. Lin from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The lecture is titled: Research Center for Energy Technology/Strategy and Oxy-fuel Combustion Research Activities at the National Cheng Kung University. It will be held on July 31, 2014 from 10:30-11:30 am in the Chaffee Hall Auditorium room 101, Maurice J. ZucrowLaboratories (500 Allison Road).
This presentation includes introduction to the Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy at National Cheng Kung University, & to the National Energy Program Phase II of Taiwanese Ministry of Science and Technology and oxy-fuel research as follows.
Carbon capture, storage and utilization has been considered to be a crucial component in a low-carbon energy technology portfolio for mitigating climate change. Oxy-fuel combustion is a promising carbon capture technology that can be used to reduce carbon emissions from boilers and furnaces through the generation of CO2rich flue gas ready for storage. The research team at NCKU has just completed a three-year first phase National Energy Project in Taiwan on the development of oxy-fuel combustion technologies. Oxy-fuel retrofit of a 280 kW research furnace has been successfully commissioned in 2013. Air leakage, a common challenge of retrofitted oxy-fuel furnaces, is effectively addressed by operating the furnace at a slightly positive pressure. Concentrations of CO2in the flue gases are able to exceed 90% (dry basis) under both oxy-coal and oxy-oil operations. The facility was further used for validating the concept of CO2capture of oxy-fuel flue gas with furnace slag. In addition, research activities relevant to oxy-fuel combustion, including combustion safety, simulation, burner design, efficiency assessments of oxy-fuel power generation, etc., have been carried out.
Dr. Ta-Hui Linis currently the Distinguished Professor at the National Cheng Kung University, and serves as the Director of Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy. He was the Director of Master Projects on Offshore Wind Power in the National Science and Technology Program-Energy, National Science Council, Taiwan. He received BS in Mechanical Engineering from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan in 1979; MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Northwestern University in USA in 1984 and in1987, respectively. He served as the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008-2011), and the Director of Energy Research Center (2001-2002) in the National Cheng Kung University.
Dr. Ming-Hsun Wuis currently an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He joined the department in 2007 after earning Ph.D. degree from the Pennsylvania State University. He received B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and M.S. in Applied Mechanics from the National Taiwan University in 1997 and 2001, respectively. Dr. Wu’s present research interests are in oxyfuelcombustion, deflagration-to-detonation, and nanothermites.
