Dr. Lumkes is involved in Bioenergy research related to the harvesting and use of crops and renewable fuels. Past and current projects include drive-by-wire technologies focused in improving machine stability and corresponding harvesting speeds, trucking fleet analyses comparing the use of B20 Biodiesel to Ultra-low-sulfur (ULS) diesel fuels, and the development of infinitely variable internal combustion engine intake and exhaust valves to allow engines to adapt and optimize combustion during the use of different renewable bio-based fuels.
Professor Lumkes is also involved in the design, simulation, and diagnostics/prognostics of energy efficient fluid power systems and components, including the use of high speed digital valves to modulate and control power delivery throughout the system, improving the system efficiency, flexibility, and reliability.
