Training and Passport

Use of the Birck Nanotechnology Center facilities requires training specific to the level of use. Most training courses take the form of "badges" in the Purdue developed Passport, a micro-credentialing system to demonstrate competencies and achievements. For detailed information on the implementation and a step by step guide to earning badges, please refer to the BNC 111 Walkthrough.

To get started with BNC training, navigate to the BNC Passport Group, login to Passport with a valid Purdue Career Account login ID and BoilerKey password, and click the “Join Group” button. Once the BNC Passport Group has been joined, the badges below may be earned.

Email BNC Engineering Manager Ron Reger with any questions about accessing BNC trainings.

BNC 111 - Birck Orientation and Safety Training

Intended Audience: Birck desk occupants and laboratory users

Course Description:
A course for all BNC facility occupants or laboratory users. Policies covered include facility policies and procedures, safety policies and procedures, procedures for using chemicals in fume hoods, and the Right-To-Know program. BNC 111 is required to obtain after-hours, office, or laboratory access, and must be obtained prior to working in any BNC laboratory (dry, solvent, acid, bio, cleanroom, or bio-cleanroom).

BNC 111 is a combined version of the previous BNC 105 and 150 courses. Users who have previously taken both BNC 105 and BNC 150 and maintained current lab access via the yearly all user meeting and BNC 151 - 2019 badge will be granted the BNC 111 badge. Users who have not completed both 105 and 150, or who have not maintained current lab access will need to take BNC 111.

Prerequisites:

  1. Sign up for iLab access:
    1. Purdue uses iLab for all billing and lab access charges. There is no charge for BNC 1XX and 2XX level trainings, but you must have an iLab account setup prior to obtaining BNC access so that you can be charged for any future store room purchases, laboratory access, or recharge equipment use.
    2. Purdue's iLab homepage can be found here and instructions for setting up an iLab account may be found here.
  2. Join the BNC Passport Group to be able to "Get Started" on any Passport badges/challenges:
    1. Navigate to the BNC Passport Group Page.
    2. Login to Passport with a valid Purdue Career Account login ID and BoilerKey password.
    3. Once logged in, click the "Join Group" button.
  3. If you have questions obtaining the BNC 111 badge, refer to the step-by-step BNC 111 Walkthrough. If you have questions that are not answered by that page, please email Ron Reger.

BNC 200 - Cleanroom Process Review

Intended Audience: Birck Cleanroom Users
(Note: ECE 557 students and cleanroom spectators do not need BNC 2XX level courses)

Course Description:
A process questionnaire and discussion for new BNC cleanroom users about their intended work. In the meeting, the new cleanroom user will describe to the engineering staff their anticipated process requirements in detail. The engineering staff will recommend processes and process tools that will facilitate the fabrication flow.

Prerequisites
