Healthy Food Access

Perhaps you have heard the term, ‘food desert’ or food insecurity. These are sometimes technical terms used to describe real-life community issues when people do not have access to the food they need to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Not everyone can hop in the car and get to the grocery.

Not everyone has a grocery store close enough to their home.

Not everyone feels safe going to the grocery.

To be sure the issues are complex. This video can give some insight into the topic of Healthy Food Access.

The Healthy Food Access Coalition in Indiana is making strides to put this issue on the minds of our Indiana State Elected officials. Their website and facebook page will keep you in the loop as you make the case to your local officials.


If you are interested in finding more data about your community and Healthy Food Access, the Healthy Food Access Portal has some amazing resources. Furthermore, you can type in your town or zip code and look at GIS-mapped data for your community.
