scholarship administration beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.

The primary goals of this initiative are to:

Reduce barriers for students by providing a single, centralized scholarship application experience

Strengthen strategic recruitment and enrollment efforts through a more coordinated scholarship process

Reduce risk management and optimize fiscal resources

The Division of Financial Aid (DFA) has developed a centralized scholarship application in Slate, a CRM platform. This application will provide students with a single place to apply for scholarships to ensure consideration for as many scholarship opportunities as possible. The application launched in mid-October of 2026 for the 2027-28 academic enrollment year.

Please reference the Division of Financial Aid (DFA) Purdue Scholarships page. This serves as Purdue’s official source for scholarship application information, instructions and timelines for students.

Scholarship Criteria and Unit Collaboration

To prepare for this transition, we have partnered with Finance and Purdue for Life to review all scholarship funds. Throughout this process, we have recognized the importance of collecting information such as student rosters for club and organization involvement, research activities, academic program concentrations, participation in unit-specific programs and recommendations required by endowment criteria.

To support these needs, we are building roster and recommendation workflows within Slate. We will ask each college or unit to designate a primary point of contact who will partner with us by providing rosters and recommendations when needed. This approach will help ensure scholarship criteria are met while maintaining strong collaboration between DFA and academic units throughout the awarding process.

Implementation Timeline

The project is currently being implemented in phases:

Phase 1 (2027-28)

All undergraduate scholarships will transition to DFA for awarding and administration.

Phase 2 (Planned for 2028-29)

The following areas are not in scope for 2027-28 but are expected to transition to DFA in 2028-29:

Awards and prizes

Athletics scholarships

Study abroad scholarships

Office of Summer and Winter Session scholarships

Most graduate scholarships

Scholarship centralization will affect a variety of university processes and stakeholders. However, the goal is to transition awards, prizes, study abroad scholarships, Office of Summer and Winter Session scholarships and graduate scholarships to DFA beginning with the 2028-29 academic year.

Will Scholarship Universe still be used as a tool for awarding student scholarships, or will Slate take over this process?

Scholarship Universe will remain the university’s primary scholarship management platform and will continue to be used for awarding scholarships. Any funds included in Phase 2 will continue to follow the current standard awarding process in Scholarship Universe during the 2027-28 academic year.

How will Slate and Scholarship Universe work together?

Slate and Scholarship Universe will serve different purposes. Slate will be the centralized scholarship application platform where students apply for Purdue scholarships. Scholarship Universe will remain the scholarship management and awarding platform used by DFA to administer scholarship awarding processes. Scholarship Universe will also continue to provide students access to external scholarship opportunities. Students will complete only one Purdue scholarship application in Slate.

Will there be an opportunity for academic unit staff to be able to see Slate and how the system works before the go-live date?

Yes, once the platform is complete, we plan to provide a demonstration at a Scholarship Communications Awarding Network (SCAN) meeting so units can preview how it functions and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Will high merit scholarship (Presidential, Trustees, Indy Scholars) selection/awarding be affected when Scholarship Centralization goes live?

No, we will continue to select and award students for high merit scholarships following the same standard process. Additional information about merit scholarships can be found on the Office of Admissions website.

How will scholarships be handled that are able to be awarded to undergraduate students as well as graduate or professional students?

If a scholarship is available to undergraduate students, it will transition to DFA beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. If a scholarship is first awarded while a student is enrolled as an undergraduate and later continues into a professional or graduate program, DFA will manage the scholarship since the initial award is made at the undergraduate level.

Scholarships designated exclusively for graduate or professional students will remain under the management of the academic units for the 2027-28 academic year.

When should undergraduate scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year be entered into Scholarship Universe?

The deadline to enter undergraduate scholarship awards for the 2026-27 academic year is September 30, 2026. After this date, no new undergraduate scholarship awards can be made for the 2026-27 award year. If your unit typically awards undergraduate scholarships on a semester basis, we ask that all awards for the 2026-27 academic year be finalized by this deadline. While awards may be canceled after September 30, no new awards can be created.

If an award needs to be canceled, please email scholarshipdfa@purdue.edu, and our team can assist with the cancellation. However, no new undergraduate scholarship awards can be added after the September 30 deadline.

What is the timeline for scholarship awarding?

We will follow the standard scholarship awarding timeline, with awards for incoming students beginning in early to mid-spring after admission decisions are released, and awards for returning students being made in late spring and early summer. Please reference the Scholarship Planning Dates in Appendix C.

What if scholarship eligibility is not determined until later in the academic year?

While most scholarship recipients will be identified and awarded during the primary awarding cycle, we recognize that there may be rare circumstances where eligibility is determined later in the academic year. This can occur when scholarship selection depends on activities, research participation, leadership roles or other criteria that are not known during the standard awarding period. In these limited cases, we will work closely with academic units to establish an appropriate process for identifying eligible students and making awards once eligibility has been confirmed.

What impact will scholarship centralization have on scholarships administered through student organizations?

The scholarships will be awarded by DFA. While student organizations will no longer be able to review student data directly, we can work with Student Life to establish a recommendation process that allows organizations and clubs to share their perspectives on potential recipients as part of the review process.

                    Student Application and Eligibility

Students are at the center of this transition. Once the process is finalized, we will provide comprehensive communications to students and ensure all relevant webpages are updated with clear information and resources to help navigate the new scholarship application process.

Will students be able to see their scholarship matches in Slate like they currently can in Scholarship Universe?

No. Students will not see scholarship match lists in Slate in the same manner they do today in Scholarship Universe. The Slate scholarship application uses smart logic to display only the questions that are relevant to each student based on information already available in Banner, such as their college, academic program and student level (undergraduate, graduate or professional).

It’s also important to note that not every scholarship will require additional application questions. In many cases, all necessary eligibility information is already available through Banner, allowing students to be considered without providing any extra information.

What happens if a student does not complete the central scholarship application?

Students are encouraged to complete the central scholarship application to maximize their scholarship consideration.

What if a student completes an application but then their major changes? Will they need to submit a new application?

If the application deadline has not passed, students may return to their application and make updates. Once a student’s major has been updated in Banner, Slate will present any additional questions associated with the new major. At that point, the student will no longer be considered for scholarships tied to their previous major.

If a student changes majors but does not return to update their application, they may still be considered for general scholarship opportunities. However, they may not be eligible for scholarships associated with their new major if the required major-specific questions have not been completed.

What does the application process look like for students? Do they need to apply through Slate and Scholarship Universe?

The central scholarship application will be housed in Slate. Students will be encouraged to complete the application to maximize their Purdue scholarship consideration. Scholarship Universe will remain available for students to search and apply for external scholarships. It will not be used for Purdue scholarship applications.

If a student has more than one major, will Slate display questions for all of their majors or only their primary major?

We will import students’ academic data from Banner, including all declared majors. Students with multiple majors will see opportunities and questions that reflect all of their majors, not just their primary major.

Will scholarship GPA requirements change under the centralized scholarship process?

We will follow the GPA requirements outlined in each scholarship’s endowment or fund agreement. If a scholarship does not specify a GPA requirement, our standard eligibility criteria will apply: a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.65 for current students and a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 for incoming students.

Would a student’s minor make them eligible for scholarships in another academic unit and trigger additional application questions?

No. Most scholarship agreements are written around a student’s major rather than their minor. A student’s minor will only be considered if a scholarship specifically includes a minor-related requirement, in which case it may trigger additional questions on the application.

Will current students with renewable scholarships need to reapply each year?

Students are encouraged to submit the scholarship application annually. Although many scholarships that are renewable do not require a new application each year for renewal, completing the application helps students maximize their eligibility for additional funding opportunities and ensures we have the most current information available when reviewing scholarship eligibility.

When is the deadline for students to apply for scholarships for the 2027-28 academic year?

Incoming students’ priority submission date is December 15, 2026 and current students’ priority submission date is April 15, 2027. Students are encouraged to complete the application by the priority submission date to maximize scholarship consideration. The central scholarship application will remain open until August 31, 2027.

If a student does not meet the renewal criteria, will they be notified?

A fund message outlining the scholarship’s eligibility and renewal criteria will be associated with each scholarship fund. Students will be able to view these fund messages through their myPurdue account, providing transparency into the requirements and expectations for each award.

Will students receive reminders to complete the FAFSA?

Yes. Students will receive communications encouraging them to complete the FAFSA so they can be considered for available need-based aid and other financial assistance opportunities.

How does participation in a study abroad program affect a student’s scholarship eligibility?

Scholarships can be used for study abroad, provided it is a program in which the student is enrolled full-time and billed through Purdue University.

How does participation in a co-op or internship affect a student’s scholarship eligibility?

Students in a co-op or internship will not receive the scholarship while away. Please reference Appendix B for our enrollment standards.

                    Academic Unit and Partnerships

Academic units and university partners remain important partners in the scholarship process. The information below outlines how colleges, schools and departments will collaborate with DFA throughout scholarship selection, administration and reporting.

Once the centralized scholarship application is live, what role will academic units play in the scholarship selection process?

We will ask each academic college or unit to designate a primary point of contact. This individual will serve as the main liaison between the unit and Division of Financial Aid (DFA) for scholarship-related matters. Questions, feedback, concerns or other scholarship-related information can be shared through the designated primary unit contact, who will work directly with us to facilitate communication and resolve issues as needed.

What will the recommendation process look like?

DFA has partnered with Purdue for Life to review all scholarship endowments and agreements. For scholarships whose agreements specify that recipients are to be selected by a committee, faculty committee or similar group, we will implement a recommendation workflow in Slate. Through this process, we will provide the unit’s primary point of contact with a list of eligible students who meet the scholarship criteria. The unit will then have the opportunity to review those students and submit recommendations for consideration.

We will use those recommendations as part of the selection process and will make the final scholarship selection. While every effort will be made to honor unit recommendations, award decisions must also consider factors such as a student’s financial aid eligibility, other aid received and institutional awarding policies. As a result, recommendations may not always align with the final award outcome.

Will academic units lose access to historical scholarship award information in Scholarship Universe?

Whether a user retains access to Scholarship Universe will depend on their ongoing scholarship responsibilities after the transition to DFA.

For example, if a user currently manages undergraduate scholarships that will transition to DFA, their Scholarship Universe access will no longer be needed and will be removed. However, users who continue to manage scholarships that remain within their unit as part of a later implementation phase will retain access to Scholarship Universe and will continue to be able to view and manage the funds for which they are responsible.

Access will be reviewed and assigned based on an employee’s continued business need and scholarship management responsibilities.

Will academic units continue to follow an approval process in Scholarship Universe for undergraduate scholarships?

All undergraduate scholarships will transition to DFA for awarding and administration beginning with the 2027-28 academic year. As a result, academic units will no longer have access to view or manage these undergraduate scholarship funds in Scholarship Universe for 2027-28. We will assume responsibility for the review, selection, awarding and ongoing management of these scholarships moving forward.

Will DFA provide academic units with reporting on scholarship awards, recipient information and fund expenditures (i.e. for banquets, recognition programs)?

DFA will be partnering with Institutional Data Analytics and Assessment (IDA+A) to create standard reporting for each unit to provide aggregate data on scholarship funds. If student specific data is needed, such as awards banquets, requests can be submitted via IDA+A.

How will stewardship responsibilities be managed once scholarship centralization is implemented?

Purdue for Life (PFL) will continue to manage all stewardship activities, and there will be no changes to the current stewardship process as a result of scholarship centralization. DFA currently partners with PFL by providing a daily recipient data feed to support stewardship efforts. This partnership will continue once scholarship centralization is implemented. PFL has been an important partner throughout this transition and recognizes that DFA will serve as the primary point of contact for questions or concerns related to scholarship funds moving forward.

Please note that student information should not be shared directly with PFL, in accordance with our student data security and privacy requirements.

Who should academic units contact within the Division of Financial Aid if they have questions about scholarships or the centralized process?

Questions, feedback, concerns or other scholarship-related information can be shared through the designated primary unit contact, who will work directly with us to facilitate communication and resolve issues as needed.

How will scholarship centralization impact an academic unit’s ability to leverage scholarships for recruitment purposes?

The DFA will continue to follow the criteria outlined in each scholarship’s endowment agreement. During our review of scholarship funds, we asked academic units to identify funds that have historically been used to support recruitment and retention efforts. We will take that information into consideration and make every effort to continue supporting those intended practices while remaining compliant with the fund’s established criteria and donor requirements.

                    Communications

Communications teams play an important role in ensuring a consistent student experience throughout the transition. However, scholarship application processes, instructions, forms and deadlines will be managed centrally to provide a consistent student experience across the university.

What should units do now to prepare?

To support a consistent student experience, academic units should begin reviewing scholarship-related content published on departmental and college websites.

As the centralized scholarship application launches, units are being asked to:

Remove local scholarship applications and application links

Retire outdated scholarship instructions and deadlines

Update webpages to direct students to the university-wide scholarship application and DFA scholarship information

Coordinate scholarship-related website updates with the project team according to forthcoming guidance

Additional details and implementation timelines will be provided as the project progresses.

Will our department still be able to publicize scholarship opportunities?

Yes. The information below outlines how scholarship funds will continue to be administered in accordance with donor-established criteria and the ongoing role of Purdue for Life.

Will donor intent still be honored?

Yes. Donor intent will continue to be honored and remains central to the scholarship awarding process. Division of Financial Aid (DFA) will award scholarships in accordance with the criteria outlined in each gift agreement and endowment agreement. Scholarship eligibility, selection and awarding decisions will continue to be guided by the donor-established requirements, ensuring that the terms and intent documented in the endowment agreement are followed.

If a donor’s desired awarding criteria or preferences are not included in the endowment agreement, how can those preferences be incorporated into the scholarship selection process?

Donors who would like to discuss scholarship awarding criteria or preferences that are not reflected in the endowment agreement should work with Purdue for Life (PFL). PFL can review the agreement with the donor and discuss any potential updates or next steps.

How will donors be notified about the transition to a centralized scholarship model and what it means for their scholarship funds?

We are not directly communicating with donors regarding scholarship centralization. However, donors who have questions or would like to discuss their scholarship funds should work with PFL.

PFL will continue to communicate with donors and, when necessary, discuss and facilitate any amendments to endowment agreements. They are also prepared to answer questions about the scholarship centralization initiative and its impact on scholarship administration.

Throughout this transition, we remain committed to honoring donor intent and adhering to the terms of each endowment agreement.

                    Financial Management and Budget Responsibilities

The success of scholarship centralization depends on close collaboration among academic units, Finance and the Division of Financial Aid. The information below outlines changes related to scholarship accounts, budgeting, projections and financial administration.

How will scholarship centralization affect scholarship System Analysis Program (SAP) accounts and Banner funds?

For most undergraduate scholarship funds included in Phase 1, the associated SAP account and Banner fund used for scholarship awarding and administration will transition to the Division of Financial Aid (DFA).

However, some accounts support activities beyond undergraduate scholarships and are not restricted solely for scholarship purposes. In these cases, the Banner fund used for scholarship awarding will transition to DFA administration, while the SAP account will remain with the academic unit to support its other authorized purposes.

Scholarship centralization does not change donor intent or the criteria established in the endowment or fund agreement. We will continue to administer scholarship funds in accordance with the approved criteria.

Will academic units still assist with scholarship projections and budgeting?

Yes. Units will continue to play an important role in scholarship planning, budgeting and projections because they maintain knowledge of fund history, anticipated activity and strategic priorities. Additional guidance regarding planning and projection processes will be communicated separately.

What happens if scholarship account information changes after projections have been submitted?

DFA will use the scholarship budgets provided through the annual projection process to establish scholarship awarding authorizations for the upcoming academic year.

If scholarship account information changes after projections have been submitted, we will work with Finance and the academic unit to determine whether budget adjustments can be made before awards are finalized. However, if scholarship awards have already been communicated or committed to students, we will honor those commitments whenever possible and will partner with the academic unit and Finance to address any resulting funding or budget impacts.

To support accurate awarding and planning, academic units are encouraged to communicate significant changes to scholarship funding, eligibility or anticipated expenditures as soon as they are known.

                    Appendix A: Definitions

The following definitions provide guidance on the distinctions among scholarships, awards, fee remissions, fellowships, grants and prizes.

Award

Financial support based on achievement, performance or other criteria. The grantor typically does not specify that the money must be used for educational expenses. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

Fee Remission

Fee remissions relieve recipients of the obligation to pay most tuition and fees. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

Fellowship

Financial support to reduce the cost of a graduate student’s education. Some fellowships include a tuition waiver or a payment to the university in lieu of tuition. Fellowships may include stipends to cover living expenses. Students receive payments to assist them in pursuing a course of study or research. This payment is not for teaching, performing research or other services. Fellowships are taxable income to the recipient. Exclusions to taxable income are amounts used to pay for tuition, fees, books and supplies. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

Grant

Financial support based on academic achievement or other criteria that may include financial need. A grant recipient is selected based on specific criteria, which is typically set by the federal or state government or the institution. Generally, the funds are granted for the student’s performance or criteria met during the previous academic year to offset education costs for an upcoming or current academic year. The university is required to report the grant as part of the student’s total resources used to offset the cost of education for the academic year. As new resources are added to the student’s financial assistance for the academic year, federal regulations may require a small number of students to repay certain federal funds. In addition, the type of funds that certain students receive may also require the university to withhold taxes from proceeds of the grant. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

Prize

Recognition based on competition or other criteria. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

Scholarship

Financial support based on academic achievement or other criteria that may include financial need. The benefactor sets the criteria for recipient selection. The funds are used to offset the cost of the student’s education for an upcoming or current academic year, depending on when the student receives the funds. These forms of payment must be considered educational resources for the student per federal regulations, and therefore, must be reported to the campus financial aid office.

                    Appendix B: Enrollment Standards

The information below outlines the enrollment and financial aid standards used by the Division of Financial Aid when administering scholarship awards and resolving disbursement issues.

The enrollment standards below will be used by the Division of Financial Aid (DFA) when resolving scholarship disbursement issues.

Cooperative Education (co-op) programs, Internships or Consortiums

For students enrolled in a Purdue-sponsored co-op, internship or consortium, DFA will remove the scholarship portion awarded during the co-op, internship or consortium.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is a financial aid measurement that refers to whether a student is making satisfactory progress towards their degree. Students must appeal if the scholarship is need-based.
