Established in 1961, Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette , IN., is the third research park established in the nation. In the late 1990s, Purdue Research Park began its transformation into a true technology park focused on companies operating in the arenas of life sciences, homeland security, engineering, advanced manufacturing and information technology.

Any technology-based company that wants to form strong ties to Purdue University may be considered for park tenancy. The park's owner, developer and manager, the nonprofit Purdue Research Foundation, initially provided emerging technology companies with business development expertise combined with a flexible leasing plan. Expanded offerings now include human resources, media relations and marketing. This strategy led to explosive growth that translated into the largest cluster of technology-based companies in the state. As of December 2009, the West Lafayette-based Purdue Research Park boasts 725 acres, 54 buildings, 157 companies, 3,134 employees and an average wage of $54,000 for employees in start-up companies.

The park offers many of its industry-leading amenities and services to every company within the park, not just its client firms, and hosts several top-notch business plan competitions, job fairs, an internship program and an entrepreneurship academy.

Today, the foundation welcomes high-tech companies to state-of-the-art technology centers located throughout Indiana, including:

  • Purdue Technology Centers of West Lafayette - Located just north of Purdue University's main campus, the centers serve as the flagship for the 725-acre, award-winning Purdue Research Park. The park is home to more than 157 companies, of which 106 are technology-related. With 365,000 square feet of incubation space, the centers are considered to be among the largest university-affiliated, business incubation complexes in the country. Many of the innovations that emerge from the groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research underway at Purdue University will find their “business legs” here. Since 1999, the center's incubation program has graduated 53 companies, of which 33 have remained in the West Lafayette-based Purdue Research Park.

  • Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana - Located on 393 acres west of I-65 near Merrillville, the 48,000-square-foot facility was Purdue's first satellite technology incubator when it opened in January of 2005. It currently serves 12 technology-based companies, four additional companies and eight technology-based affiliate companies where nearly 100 professionals work. This center and the Purdue University Calumet Academic Learning Center serve as anchors for the surrounding mixed-use business and technology park - AmeriPlex at the Crossroads - under development by Purdue Research Foundation and Holladay Properties Inc.

  • Purdue Technology Center of Indianapolis - Opened in early 2009, the 55,000-square-foot technology incubator anchors the Purdue Research Park at Ameriplex-Indianapolis, which is a 78-acre, Indianapolis-based park being jointly developed by Purdue Research Foundation and Holladay Properties Inc. It currently serves 5 companies and has four affiliate companies. The park is located along the I-70 corridor and near the midfield terminal of the Indianapolis International Airport. It is the centerpiece of the latest 400-acre phase of AmeriPlex-Indianapolis, a nearly 1,500-acre development.

  • Purdue Technology Center of Southeast Indiana - Dedicated in 2008, the 40,000-square-foot facility is located on 40 acres of land donated by the Shine family, founders and owners of Samtec Inc., an electronic interconnect manufacturer. It serves two technology-based companies. The center contains 18,000 square feet of business incubator offices, an economic development office, an office for Purdue's Technical Assistance Program and classrooms for the Purdue University College of Technology.
