Integrative Data Science Education Ecosystem

We are growing a Data Science Education Ecosystem that prepares all Purdue students to invent, innovate, and lead in a data driven world. This will be accomplished not only through curricular and lab activities, but through learning communities, undergraduate research opportunities, extracurricular opportunities, distinguished guest speakers, and other events that infuse knowledge, skills and abilities about data science.

The Purdue ecosystem seeks to be highly diverse and multi-disciplinary and will be integrated with our research mission and external partnerships. Specifically, Purdue will:

Grow and Support Data Science Related Majors

Purdue currently offers a number of data science related majors across campus. We will continue to support and grow these major areas to educate a diverse and talented generation of data scientists.

Embed Data Science into Domain Curricula

Data science impacts almost every discipline and domain on our campus. Students who graduate from our domain majors will need to work, lead, and make decisions throughout their career based on data and information from data scientists. Our goal therefore is to create opportunities for Purdue students from any major to graduate with experience in solving real data science problems relevant to their domain area.

Build Data Literacy & Fluency in All Students

The initiative recognizes that not every student should major in nor seek expert competency in data science; however, ALL Purdue students regardless of major should be data literate. As part of this initiative, Purdue will define data literacy/fluency outcomes for undergraduate students as well as map and make available courses, content and experiences that meet these outcomes.

Data Mind

On the education front, one of the exciting programs that the College of Engineering is pioneering is called “Data Mind for Purdue Engineers.” The goal of Data Mind is for every Purdue engineer, starting with the Class of 2020, to graduate with exposure to at least some of the three elements of Data Science: Foundations, Implementation, and Applications.

Advance the Data Mine Living and Learning Community

Purdue is poised to establish the largest data science Living and Learning Community in the nation, creating opportunities for multi-disciplinary undergraduates to learn, grow and thrive together. Students will live within residential learning communities that enable them to gain data science expertise, data-driven domain knowledge, and participate in early research experiences. Research indicates that students who participate in learning communities earn higher grades, make friends more easily and graduate at higher and faster rates. To our knowledge, Purdue will be the first institution to dedicate an entire residence hall to a data science academic theme. The inaugural cohort of students will move into the Data Mine at Hillenbrand Hall in the Fall of 2018.
