ARITIST IN RESIDENCE
In 2011, singer-songwriter Gabriel Royal had a cello, a dollar, and a dream. He began performing in New York’s subways—bringing serenity to the surliest commuters and earning the title of “Brooklyn’s best busker” from the Huffington Post. As the L train links Manhattan to Royal’s home borough of Brooklyn, Royal’s music connects to human hustle and bustle. Influenced by Stevie Wonder’s gracious grooves and Burt Bacharach’s jazz-pop, Royal has collaborated with contemporary powerhouses like John Legend, Flying Lotus, James Blake, and Janelle Monáe, and released a critically acclaimed debut album. At Purdue, Royal will inspire our students and community with performances and workshops in unexpected places as our Outreach Artist-In-Residence. Watch our website for details!
