Graduate Teacher Certificate (GTC) FAQ's

Application Process

The certificate program is now administered via Blackboard. Click on the button to the left to enroll in any of the certificate programs. Please specify:

  • Your name, major, department and how far you are in your degree.
  • Your teaching experience at Purdue, when applicable (describe your exact teaching duties).
  • The certificate you are interested in pursuing.

Graduate teaching assistants are encouraged to start working towards the certificates as soon as they begin their teaching appointments on campus. If you want to participate in the awards reception offered by CIE every spring semester, the teaching report (plus any supporting documentation) must be turned in by April 1.

Requirements/Tier system

Visit each of the certifcate's page to look at the requirement for each program. Our brochure provides a summary of all the requirements.

All tiers are related, so whatever you have completed for "Tier 1" will count towards "Tier 2" and whatever you have completed for "Tier 2" will count towards "Tier 3". In other words, you will only need to complete any "additional" requirements for each of the higher tiers.

If you are applying for the GTC or AGTC you must be an instructor (not a grader or an R.A.). In addition, you must be formally evaluated at the end of the semester by Purdue.

Teaching Report & signatures

The teaching report will be provided to you once you enroll on the program. CIE staff will verify (sign) "Teacher Report 2" (as long as you took CIE's orientation), "Teacher Report 3" and "Teacher Report 4" (as long as you took CIE's workshops), as well as all the reflection and essay reviews when you turn in the completed teaching reports.

The signatures for "Teacher Report 1" and "Teacher Report 5" have to be from faculty members in your department.

Award Ceremony

The certificates are awarded once per academic year (during the spring semester), but you are welcome to turn in your completed teaching report during the fall semester deadline (this information will be given to you once you enroll in the program).
