Conference for Pre-Tenure Women

The Conference for Pre-Tenure Women is the keystone event of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence. Offered each year in the fall, this conference brings pre-tenure women – and men – faculty from across the country together on Purdue’s campus to gather information, learn strategies and network with others in an effort to increase tenure success.

The Conference for Pre-Tenure Women was initiated at Purdue in 2010 for two main reasons. First, there is the persistent problem of very few women in STEM disciplines which is related to the second reason and that is the success of these women as being key to retention and recruitment. However, this early emphasis has now been modified to include all disciplines and particularly to recognize the structural disadvantages that all women face. In addition, although targeted at pre-tenure women, such conferences can be useful for all other faculty to become better colleagues and mentors.

The Butler Center and the Office of the Provost at Purdue University clearly recognize the need for supporting all faculty, and especially women, to ensure that they can excel and succeed. The vision to fulfill a much-needed niche was made possible by the Butler Center. It is important to note that the barriers and challenges faced by women and faculty of color has not changed substantially in the past three or more decades and we still have very few women in leadership positions in academia.  Therefore, the conference is significant for enabling women’s success and facilitating their entry into leadership positions.

The 10th annual conference opens on September 5, 2019. Faculty from within Purdue and from other colleges and universities are welcome to take advantage of all that the conference offers.
